Alanis Morissette Sued for Denying Cowriting Credit on Jagged Little Pill

In a recent legal action, it’s claimed that the hit-making Canadian singer Alanis Morissette is withholding credit from an alleged co-writer for the songs on her blockbuster album Jagged Little Pill.

As reported by Radar Online, Joseph Michael Hunt claims in a lawsuit that he collaborated on writing the 1995 album together with the 50-year-old singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette.

Hunt filed his complaint against Morissette and Epiphany Productions Inc. in November 2024.

Nevertheless, it appears the summons remained unheeded until recently, in the last month, when the defendants filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

DailyMail.com has reached out for comment to representatives of Morissette.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m proud to share some insight about Morissette, the captivating artist who graced the FireAid concert stage last month in support of LA Fire recovery efforts. It’s fascinating to note that she penned all the lyrics for her iconic album Jagged Little Pill. However, each composition on this masterpiece is a collaborative effort between Morissette and Glen Ballard, who not only wrote the words but also produced the LP.

Ballard explains that most of the songwriting and recording for the album were done primarily by him and Morissette, often collaborating on compositions within just an hour’s time.

Ballard stated that he mainly captured the instrumental demos for the preliminary backing tracks in his personal studio, with Morissette lending her voice and playing the harmonica.

In an attempt to preserve authenticity, the pair is said to have limited subsequent layered recordings and frequently opted for the initial, often single or double, vocal takes by Morissette when re-recording songs.

In conversation with Radar Online, Hunt stated that Alanis has been repeatedly asked to restore my intellectual properties over the years, but she hasn’t.

1. He claimed that the musician had sold his soul a long time ago, and he believed she was a skillful but cruel individual.

2. The man asserted that the rocker had given away his soul years back, implying a deal with the devil, and he thought of her as a gifted yet mean-spirited person.

3. He alleged that the musician had sold his soul to the devil long ago, and he regarded her as a skillful but cruel individual.

4. The man suggested that the rocker had given away his soul in some kind of deal years back, and he viewed her as a talented yet mean-spirited person.

5. He contended that the musician had traded his soul for something valuable a long time ago, and he considered her a skillful but cruel individual.

6. The man asserted that the rocker had sold his soul to the devil or a similar entity years back, and he saw her as a skilled yet mean-spirited person.

It remains uncertain whether Hunt specifically states when or under which conditions he was part of the songwriting process for Jagged Little Pill, or if he asserted that he wrote every song – with Ballard being given credit for all – or merely a few of them.

The album was the third one by Morissette, coming after two pop-focused albums that didn’t sell well and garnered a mix of positive and negative criticisms.

With the debut of Jagged Little Pill, the initial two records were no longer available for sale, as this album showcased an alternative rock style influenced by grunge music.

The album was a hit with critics and a massive commercial success.

Initially, the album entered the Billboard 200 at position 117. However, within a span of four months, it managed to reach the top spot and maintained that position for 12 consecutive weeks. Since then, it has been certified Platinum 17 times in the US, which signifies sales exceeding 17 million copies in the United States alone.

The top hit and fan favorite from this album is the second track titled “You Oughta Know,” a bitter-sweet breakup song that subtly mentions an ex-boyfriend without being explicitly named. It climbed up to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and became the top song on the US Alternative Airplay chart.

It’s been speculated, as Morissette never explicitly stated it, that the comedian and Full House star, Dave Coulier, may have inspired her famous hit song.

He’s hinted at some points where scenes reminded him of his past with Morissette, yet she subsequently refuted claims that he was depicted in the 2021 documentary titled “Jagged,” which delved into the creation and launch of Jagged Little Pill.
