Laura Whitmore: From Love Island Millions to Local Theatre

Over the past five years, Laura Whitmore has made a significant change in her career path, moving away from her successful television roles to perform for small theater audiences numbering only 300.

Starting her career in show business as a reporter for MTV, she subsequently landed the prestigious position on Love Island, hosting the ITV series from 2020 to 2022 following the departure of Caroline Flack.

However, after only three seasons, Laura unexpectedly left the popular show, which continues to attract a massive audience. She explained her departure by stating that some aspects of the program were challenging for her.

Later on, she criticized ITV managers, stating that she felt compelled to keep silent regarding her views towards the islanders. Moreover, she expressed growing annoyance with the limitations of her position.

After leaving ITV, Laura has significantly reduced her presence on television.

She made efforts to continue her association with ITV, hosting the brief-lived morning talk show titled “Laura Whitmore’s Breakfast Show.” However, the program was terminated following only a few months on air, and similarly, her Prime Video series “Date My Mate” ended after completing just one season.

Since then, the star has produced documentaries and feels grateful for her role as producer in her ITVX series “Laura Whitmore Investigates,” having only been known as the public figurehead for previous television ventures.

At that point, she openly acknowledged that she perceived the action as a means of regaining her authority, following feelings of exasperation due to lack of control over the projects she was involved in.

But to date the series has only aired three episodes.  

Ever since leaving Love Island last year, I’ve found myself completely drawn to the world of theatre. It wasn’t long after that, in 2022, when I made my West End debut in the chilling production of 2:22 – A Ghost Story. This play has garnered quite a reputation not for its sparkling critiques but for its seemingly endless cast rotations.

This coming summer, she will take charge of a traveling adaptation of “The Girl on the Train.” After spending a month at the Hampstead Theatre, which is just a stone’s throw away from her North London residence, she will be performing in a fresh play entitled “Apex Predator.

In stark contrast, the cozy atmosphere of Hampstead Theatre, seating only 325 people, stands in marked difference to the vast audience of three million regular viewers of her former show, Love Island.

Laura has openly shared her motivations behind accepting the theater assignments, most recently disclosing that these decisions are primarily influenced by family arrangements, given her role as a mother to her four-year-old daughter, Stevie.

In the lead part of “Apex Predator”, Laura’s spouse, Iain, is scheduled to travel across the UK for his stand-up comedy tour, prior to her embarking on a journey around various locations in the country for “The Girl On The Train”.

She shared with The Sunday Post recently that life is a delicate balance for her. To avoid disrupting their daughter’s education, she’s chosen to perform in the summer, allowing them to coordinate schedules. When she did the West End production, it ran for 18 weeks. This arrangement worked perfectly because during the day she had her child and at night she would go to the theater.

Let me be honest with you, it’s quite a challenging situation, but rest assured, our top priority will always be our child, no matter what.

I genuinely enjoy my job and the chances it offers me, yet it can be quite challenging. I’ve had to juggle my tasks around her sleep schedule, even working odd hours at times.

Even though it’s advantageous to have consecutive theater performances, Laura probably earns less money compared to the substantial salary she had while hosting Love Island.

According to reports from What’s On Stage and other experts, the income of stage actors can vary significantly – they might earn approximately £1,430 per week, although this depends on audience size. In contrast, it was once speculated that Laura could have received around £600,000 for her appearance on Love Island; however, she has since refuted these claims.

At least for now, I find myself harboring ambitions that don’t involve accumulating vast fortunes. Instead, I’ve discovered a role that has proven to be my greatest challenge yet – motherhood. Caring for my daughter has significantly altered my perspective on life, making me more mindful of time and ensuring I invest it wisely in what truly matters. In essence, this experience has made me more appreciative.
