At the age of 87, Susan Hampshire stands among our most revered actresses, yet her encounter with the rampant surge of violent crime in London serves as a stark reminder that no one is immune to this urban crisis.

In a recent disclosure, actress Hampshire, famous for her roles in the 1960s BBC dramas The Forsyte Saga and Monarch of the Glen, shared that she was a victim of theft on the London Underground.

At a recent Talking Pictures gathering in the city, she shared an unfortunate incident: ‘The other day, I was robbed on the subway.’ She also mentioned her regret for not having hidden her money in her bra, as both her phone and purse were stolen in the incident.

The award-winning actress, boasting three Emmy trophies from her impressive career, refrained from providing further specifics about the robbery incident. However, her revelation emerges at a time when there’s been an increase in muggings occurring on the London subway system.

Over the past month, there has been a continuous rise in violent incidents on the Tube, a trend that began when Sadiq Khan was elected as London’s mayor in 2016. The year 2023 marked the peak of this disturbing increase, setting an unfortunate record for the highest number of such cases.

Over the course of 2023, crime reports on the Tube reached an all-time high of 22,562 incidents, as demonstrated by the steadily increasing data points.

This was up a huge 52 per cent from the same period in 2022.

Over the past ten years, Hampshire faced numerous challenges as she cared for her second spouse, Sir Eddie Kulukundis, throughout his 14-year fight against Alzheimer’s disease, which ended with his passing in 2021.

She had been married to the theatre impresario and philanthropist for 40 years.

As a die-hard admirer, let me share a personal tidbit about my beloved actress. She’s not just a mother of one, but that one is none other than film producer Christopher Granier-Deferre, the fruit of her first union with the renowned French director, Pierre Granier-Deferre.
