After 28 years, BBC weather presenter Carol Kirkwood is leaving BBC Breakfast. She shared the news on this morning’s show in a heartfelt conversation with hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent.
“So I’m going to be leaving,” Kirkwood began. “It’s really hard for me to say this because I love my job.”
Holding her hand, Nugent commented that things were looking bright for Kirkwood, explaining the weather presenter would be enjoying some travel time with her husband.

“I’m going to be spending more time with Steve, my gorgeous husband,” Kirkwood confirmed.
Things haven’t been easy since my partner and I got married a couple of years ago – we’ve been living pretty separate lives, just rushing around. Honestly, I’m really excited about finally having some dedicated time together. We’re also dreaming of getting away and doing some traveling!
Honestly, it got a little emotional when I told Kay and Nugent how much they mean to me. I just told them I love them both – they’re really special friends, and I didn’t want to hold back.
Kirkwood explained that while she’s enjoyed her work and time at the BBC, her husband is her top priority.
When asked about finally getting to sleep in, she playfully said she didn’t know what it felt like, and joked that alarm clocks would soon be unnecessary.
She explained that making this decision was difficult, but she felt the time was right to move on. She added that she would always cherish the good memories she made.
After gaining experience at The Weather Channel, the Met Office, and previously at the BBC, Kirkwood became a part of the BBC Weather Centre team in April 1998.
She started her career presenting weather on the BBC News channel and frequently appeared on BBC One. Since 2010, she’s been the lead weather presenter on BBC Breakfast, delivering daily forecasts, often live from events like Wimbledon and the Chelsea Flower Show.
The presenter competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, and her dance partner was Pasha Kovalev.
BBC Breakfast airs from 6am to 9am on BBC One.
