The classic horror movie that scared a generation away from getting dogs is now available on streaming. Based on a story by Stephen King, the film features a terrifyingly realistic depiction of a rabid St. Bernard. Even after over 40 years, this surprisingly overlooked monster thriller still feels incredibly intense and frightening.
While not as famous as some of Stephen King’s other movie adaptations, Lewis Teague’s film version of Cujo has gained a dedicated fanbase over time. Starring Dee Wallace – recognizable as the mom from the 1982 movie E.T. – and Danny Pintauro, the movie tells the story of a mother and son terrorized by a rabid dog while trapped inside their car. Cujo is a uniquely intense experience, expertly crafted with strong editing and realistic effects to create a claustrophobic and terrifying journey. It’s a truly gripping and suspenseful film that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Stephen King Actually Liked ‘Cujo’s New Ending

Be warned: the following reveals key plot points from the novel Cujo. The book’s original ending was far more tragic than the one shown in the movie. While Donna manages to kill the rabid dog and her husband, Vic, arrives shortly after, he discovers their son, Tad, has already died from the effects of the heat and lack of water.
Despite the book being a huge success, the filmmakers – Teague, along with writers Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner – decided to alter some parts for the movie. They felt the original ending, where the child dies, would be too disturbing for viewers, and Stephen King actually agreed with this change, opting to let the boy survive.
In a recent podcast interview, actress Wallace shared details about making the classic horror film. She explained that she insisted a key plot point be changed: the child character couldn’t die. She remembered telling the filmmakers, ‘The dog is possessed, but the kid can’t die.’ Wallace also pointed out that it was the 1980s, and audiences weren’t prepared for the level of darkness the story contained, especially those who hadn’t read the original book.
The actor shared that the author sent a note to the film crew shortly after they’d finished the movie, expressing his relief about the altered ending. Stephen King reportedly wrote, ‘Thank goodness you didn’t kill the child at the end. I received more angry letters about that possibility than anything else I’ve ever written.’
‘Cujo’ Is One of the Most Underappreciated Nature Horror Movies of All Time
As a huge Stephen King fan, I think Cujo isn’t just one of his best movie adaptations, it’s a really strong entry in the ‘nature attacks!’ subgenre of horror. We’ve got classics like Jaws, The Birds, and Arachnophobia, and fun ones like Lake Placid and Eight-Legged Freaks, even The Ruins. But honestly, Cujo deserves to be right up there with the best of them when it comes to movies where nature turns scary and fights back against people.
This classic horror film remains effective thanks to its strong acting, fast-paced editing, and realistic special effects. It doesn’t shy away from showing just how grueling the experience is for the characters, and you can tell the actors genuinely pushed themselves during filming. It’s uncertain if the upcoming Netflix remake will capture the same feel as the 1983 version, or if it will even include the original ending.
Cujo is currently streaming on Paramount+.
