Rei Ayanami Guide & Analysis – Should you Pull?
Overview
- Has a strong set team archetype (Mono fire team) but falls off quickly if there are missing Nikkes in the team (Modernia/Asuka). Other Nikkes can be substituted in neutral element content.
- Rei’s team is as strong as Modernia as a lot of the team’s damage will fall on her if there are no parts, otherwise Asuka will be the heavy hitter.
- Rei has pretty good personal damage but falls behind other DPS MG’s (Christmas ludmilla, Low health Guillotine, Modernia) but when paired with her optimal team, Asuka is able to buff Rei to deal just around Scarlet’s damage
- falls off outside of fire teams, she’s not flexible.
- Currently a staple third or fourth hardest hitting team in element neutral content in solo raid. Second or first in fire element weak raids, depending on boss.
- Can pull if focused on Solo raids as she’s a great addition to fire weak element raids, or a “Nikke” Collector. Recommended to have Modernia and/or Asuka to make good use of her. Has potential with future Fire Nikkes if they function similarly to Modernia (High Damage Non-Burst Nikke)
Newbie/Incomplete Box Section
Rei possesses a good amount of damage per second (DPS), and while her abilities have a very specific role, they’re quite powerful. Fortunately, there are characters like Asuka and Modernia who can make the most of these buffs, unfortunately, Asuka is a limited character, and Modernia belongs to the Pilgrim class.
In terms of Rei, there’s not a lot to discuss since she primarily serves the role of assisting Modernia to inflict greater damage during boss fights.
This team tends to rank among the third or fourth strongest for boss fights and solo raids, but it falls short in survivability compared to top-tier teams because it lacks healing abilities. If a healer is required, it could significantly lower the team’s Damage Per Second (DPS) as the healer would need to be placed in either the Burst II or III slot.

Skills
Skill 1: Preemptive Subdual
Triggers following 100 regular attacks. Boosts its own power level by 30.23% for 3 seconds, dealing strong elemental damage.
Activates after executing 100 normal attacks. Enhances the nearby enemy within the attack range closest to the crosshair, dealing 112.37% of its final Attack (ATK) as damage.
In the game, Machine Guns will consistently enhance their damage towards foes vulnerable to fire, firing at a rate of 60 bullets every second when the game runs at 60 frames per second.
In simpler terms, her attack ability increases her damage output by approximately 18% at its maximum. Additionally, this added damage from the ability doesn’t directly impact the main source of damage (core hit). The scaling of this skill is relatively weak, with both the elemental damage boost and proc damage increasing in small, incremental steps.
FPS VS DPS (Newbies)
Thanks to Shift up’s clever coding, the firing rate is determined by the frames per second (FPS) of the device. As the FPS increases, so does the firing rate. However, machine guns are significantly impacted by this issue and may experience a decrease in damage per second (DPS) of up to 50%.
FPS settings can be found in the settings tab. Make sure max frame rate is always at 60
Skill 2: Attack Support
At the onset of a battle, I engage and primarily focus on the shield. My damage is amplified by an incredible 700.5%, dealing continuous harm to it, not affecting my overall power in any way. During Burst stage 3, I become active and boost all Fire Code allies. For a duration of 10 seconds, their Attack Power receives a 25.03% increase from mine.
A modest Attack buff on every full burst as it procs on burst stage 3. However it is limited to fire code allies. There are not much viable Fire DPS nikkes, but the ones that are viable are relevant to the meta.
There are only a few bosses with shields in the game (Rebuild Vulcan, Mat-H)
Fire DPS’s
In most instances, either Modernia or Asuka will be teamed up with Rei, while Alice is not a suitable match due to her stronger team synergy with Scarlet: Black Shadow. This is because Alice doesn’t benefit from Rei’s Burst (48% ATK damage) when she herself is in the burst state. A2 and 2B are both effective fire DPS characters, but A2 necessitates a healer, and 2B already has a large attack pool.
Burst: Annihilation: High Explosives
This ability influences every Fire Code ally you have, creating a protective shield that’s roughly 13.44% of your maximum health for a duration of 10 seconds. Additionally, it increases your attack power by approximately 48.02% over the same period. The effect extends to all enemies as well, dealing damage equivalent to 990.2% of your current attack power.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, Rei’s shield is quite something! It can totally ward off those heavy-hitting attacks, but only once every other full burst. What’s even more impressive is that if the damage surpasses the shield’s health value, it doesn’t seep through to the protected Nikkes. This makes it an outstanding tool for sustainability in certain bosses, especially those with single-hit nukes like Ultra or Land eater.
While Rei’s shields operate effectively with fire-based Nikkes, it’s important to note that her support skills (Burst I and Burst II) may be susceptible to area-of-effect attacks unless you manually cover them. In some solo raids and boss battles, the coverage can be quite limited, making it impractical to solely depend on Rei’s shields in most challenging content.
In combat situations, the explosion delivers considerable area-of-effect (AoE) damage that proves beneficial both in campaigns and player versus player scenarios. However, its impact on her total damage per second (DPS) during boss fights or solo rapture encounters is relatively minor.
Campaign
Rei might not stand out as a star performer during the campaign, but she could prove useful in supporting the specified Nikkes. While she’s not the first choice, she can step up when there are no better alternatives for support.
As a fan, I’d like to highlight one standout feature about Rei, other than her ability to boost fire-based Nikkes: her screen wipe burst, which is quite potent. Compared to other non-pilgrim screen wipers like Maiden, Privaty: Unkind Maid, and Kilo, Rei truly shines in this aspect.
In terms of campaign performance, Scarlet and Rei are rather comparable if the player isn’t utilizing specialized teams (Mono Fire or Mono Electric) with Scarlet having a slight edge in damage output. However, where Scarlet excels in raw damage, Rei takes care of those pesky hit count raptures (Glasses) that crop up in later chapters.
Mono Fire Team
Summary, 7/10 Campaign Clearing, Strong in Mono Fire Content
A team that might require a bit more skill to handle than usual ones, not due to any complex tricks, but because the player has to strategically decide when to deploy the right unit for an attack.
In most teams, this isn’t a problem, but since these characters rely on their burst abilities (Asuka for burst damage against boss waves, Rei for attack damage buffs, and Modernia for controlling the Crown), players must regularly switch between them.
It seems that Rei might not be an essential member in our team, given that Asuka and Modernia can effectively perform their tasks even without her involvement. Her abilities, it appears, are not crucial for us to clear the stages successfully.
Roles And Replacements
Main Nikke

- Modernia – Crowd Control, Sub-DPS
- Asuka – Burst Damage, Pierce
- Rei – Buffer, DPS
Offensive Supports (B2’s)
- Crown – Multitude of Offensive buffs, Best in slot B2 in almost every team
Replacements
Cool Down Reduction (Literless)
- Volume, Dorothy, D: Killer Wife
DPS’s (B3’s)
- Alice (High Investment, Manual Play Heavy) – Single Target Damage, wave clear, burst generator
Offensive Supports (B2)
- Rosanna: Chic Ocean
- Burst generator (Centi, Anis, Nihilister)
Skill Investments / Heavy Investment
Assume All skills of team members are at least 5/5/5.
- Mid Game: Modernia 10/7/5 -> Crown 7/7/7 Asuka 7/10/7 -> Liter 7/5/7 -> Rei 5/7/5
- Late Game: Modernia 10/10/7 ->Crown 10/10/10 -> Asuka 10/10/10 -> Liter 10/5/10 -> Rei 7/7/7
Rei’s talent advancement isn’t very effective with each level, making it less beneficial to upgrade her abilities beyond level 7.
Arena
Luckily, Rei’s explosive attack significantly boosts her effectiveness in the arena setting, given its area-of-effect nature. However, she doesn’t bring anything fresh to the table, but she can serve as a suitable stand-in for compositions involving Scarlet or Jackal.
As a devoted admirer, I believe that Rei could deliver comparable explosive damage in quick succession, akin to Scarlet’s burst skill. However, it’s important to note that Rei’s burst generation is less efficient due to the longer wind-up time and being set at 30 FPS in the arena.
Will be expanded in the future (Gotta nudge my PvP dude again, I dislike PvP – Valkin)
Special Interception | Solo Raid | Union Raid
Special Interception (+ Anomaly)
As a gamer, I find that my character, Rei, isn’t too useful in handling special interceptions, except against fire-weak bosses. Luckily for me, Alteisein is one of those fire-weak bosses and is known to be the toughest special intercept boss for newcomers like myself.
As a newcomer without other means to boost elemental damage, Rei’s enhanced damage output is quite beneficial. Regardless of whether the Commander has other fire-based Nikkes, Rei can still hold her own and deal significant damage.
Anomaly (Indivilia)
D: Killer Wife can optionally be used instead of Rapi: Red Hood and Crown can be chosen over Grave.
Rei is an effective choice against Indivilia, but may not be the ideal first pick. A strategic 1-1-3 Burst formation with Asuka/Alice, Rei, and Modernia can be used against Indivilia. However, fielding Crown Naga or Tia/Naga could potentially deal similar or even greater damage compared to Rei’s team. This is because, despite the risk of Crown Naga being eliminated in phase 2 due to a cover-piercing Nuke, it can still deliver significant damage.
Solo Raid | Union Raid
Mono-Fire Team
The Nikke team, consisting of just five members, excels in producing massive bursts thanks to Grave’s interaction with MG Nikke. This team performs effectively not only in situations where there is a fire weakness but also in other scenarios, boosted by buffs and harmonious synergy within the group.
Closing Thoughts/ Should you pull
A challenging subject indeed, given that her character type is quite specialized, often proving hit-or-miss for various commanders due to limited compatible characters – specifically, only two Nikkes typically work effectively with her. However, this could potentially change as new Nikke types are introduced (particularly Fire Nikkes).
Rei’s solo raid team is quite powerful, especially when it comes to non-elemental content. However, her role within the team isn’t as solid, even in teams she prefers the most.
Option 1: If you’re interested in high-tier solo raid content, particularly for current and upcoming fire-based raids, and you already have Asuka, or need a temporary substitute for Scarlet in Arena, then consider using it now. Otherwise, wait for Mari (assumed to be excellent) or the Anniversary Pilgrim if your commander is low on gems or tickets.
Nikke | Budget Skill Investments | Recommended Skill Investments | Skill Priority | Notes | Investment Priority |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Rei Ayanami | Skill 1: 4 Skill 2 : 4 Burst : 7 | Skill 1: 7 Skill 2 : 7 Burst : 10 | S2 > S1 | Skill 1 and 2 have low scaling for their skills, and are not impactful enough to warrant spending gold books for. Her burst offers a high ATK damage up boost, which is good for Strong Sub-DPS Nikkes (Currently only Modernia as of now) | High |
