Kevin Costner’s Modern Western Masterpiece Is Quietly Climbing Netflix Global Streaming Charts

Kevin Costner’s critically acclaimed Western film is gaining popularity again, now appearing on Netflix’s top charts worldwide.

Kevin Costner is best known for his work in Western films, beginning with Silverado in 1985. He gained even more recognition with Dances With Wolves (1990), which he both starred in and directed, earning him two Academy Awards. He continued to make Westerns throughout his career, including Wyatt Earp (1994) and Open Range (2003), the latter of which he also directed. From 2018 to 2024, he starred as rancher John Dutton in the television series Yellowstone. Most recently, he starred in and directed Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024), the first of a planned four-part series. Currently, another one of his Western films is gaining popularity.

Let Him Go Quietly Climbs Netflix’s Global Streaming Charts

I’ve been noticing a lot of buzz about Let Him Go lately – it’s slowly but surely making its way up the charts on Netflix, which is fantastic! It came out a few years ago, but if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It’s a really gripping neo-Western thriller, directed by Thomas Bezucha and based on a novel by Larry Watson. Kevin Costner plays a retired sheriff, and he and his wife, played by the wonderful Diane Lane, go on this intense journey to try and rescue their grandson from a seriously unsettling family living way off the grid. It’s a good one!

As of today, April 9th, the movie Let Him Go is currently the 6th most popular film on Netflix worldwide. It’s behind Striking Distance at number one, as well as Eat Pray Bark, Humint, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, and the new release Anaconda (2025). It’s ahead of films like Feel My Voice, Untold: Chess Mates, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and The Marksman, which is in 10th place.

This week, the movie Let Him Go is a Top 10 hit on Netflix in 43 countries around the world, including those in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. While it’s not currently on Netflix in the US, you can stream Let Him Go on Peacock.

I was really excited to see Kevin Costner and Diane Lane reunite on screen – they were fantastic as Superman’s parents in Man of Steel! But the rest of the cast in Let Him Go is incredible too. Kayli Carter, Ryan Bruce, and the young actors Otto and Bram Hornung all impressed me. Plus, seeing an Oscar nominee like Lesley Manville (from Phantom Thread) join the film was a real treat. Will Brittain, Jeffrey Donovan (who I loved in Burn Notice), Will Hochman, Connor Mackay, Adam Stafford, Booboo Stewart, Greg Lawson, and Bradley Stryker round out a truly talented group.

Was Let Him Go A Success?

I really enjoyed Let Him Go when it first came out, and critics seemed to agree – it got an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes! They said the movie sometimes felt a little off-balance, trying to be both a serious drama and a tense thriller. But honestly, the acting was fantastic, with some really reliable veterans carrying the whole thing. Audiences seemed to like it too, giving it a 76% score, which is pretty good!

Despite coming out in theaters in November 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie Let Him Go didn’t perform well financially, earning just $11.6 million against a $21 million budget. Some, like Greg MacArthur from ScreenRant, consider this to be one of the most underrated Westerns in Kevin Costner’s career.
