Hugh Grant was responsible for that hilarious Paddington in Peru credit scene
Director Dougal Wilson disclosed that it was Hugh Grant who orchestrated the amusing ending credit sequence of the movie “Paddington in Peru.
In the third installment of the series, we find our beloved character, the bear voiced by Ben Whishaw, along with the Brown clan embarking on a zany expedition to South America. Their mission? To track down Aunt Lucy, who has gone missing. Imelda Staunton lends her voice to Aunt Lucy in this adventure.
Although the majority of the movie focused on their adventures in Peru, there was also a brief appearance by Grant, reprising his character from Paddington 2, Phoenix Buchanan, who remains imprisoned due to his villainous acts.
In the final scene, Paddington and his bear companions went to see Phoenix behind bars. Once released, the theater actor shared his wish to put on a play of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ featuring Paddington’s comrades and relatives.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Wilson (now the director) shared that Grant played a significant role in shaping the scene, reminiscing: “Grant himself came up with many ideas for this scene, even contributing to its writing and deciding what he would say to all the bears when they appeared.
Hugh conceived the thought that Phoenix was on the verge of being unveiled. Instantly, his mind drifted to the theater, a place he felt at home, and before him, potential actors for his upcoming performance began to take shape.
He showed great enthusiasm and proposed the idea of the Bears taking part in this fresh project, which I’d be thrilled to witness. Everything about it felt just right and amusing, he concluded.
Phoenix Buchanan finds himself in an unexpected predicament: instead of encountering a single bear, he’s surrounded by a whole group. His demeanor, given this situation, and how he manages to endure their presence, knowing that they are merely paying him a friendly visit.
Wilson expressed a desire to replicate the setting in “Paddington 2” where all the prisoners unexpectedly appear, with Paddington acting as the introducer for each one.
Paddington in Peru is in US cinemas now, and available on-demand in the UK.
