Richard Gadd’s Dream Collaboration: Could The Rock Be Next?
Richard Gadd is already contemplating his upcoming joint project following the success of his series, Baby Reindeer, which garnered multiple acting accolades at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
In an exclusive chat with DailyMail.com, the 35-year-old mastermind behind the successful TV show shared his plans to collaborate with a surprising talent, following his triumph at the awards where he received recognition for the outstanding gender-neutral lead performance in a new scripted series.
At a ceremony in Santa Monica, California, which was overseen by ex-SNL star Aidy Bryant, Anora – a potential Oscar winner – triumphed in the film categories, while Shōgun emerged victorious against Baby Reindeer to claim the award for the best new scripted series.
As a die-hard fan bursting with enthusiasm, I can’t help but feel my heart race at the prospect of Gadd collaborating with none other than the charismatic powerhouse, Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson. Despite his impressive roster of A-list talent eager to join forces with him, this potential partnership is what truly sets my fan-heart aflutter!
I really admire Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock. At the moment, I’m hoping to hear from him about possibly collaborating on a project,” said Gad, playfully implying that he’s waiting for Johnson to call.
He hasn’t received any contact from him yet, but Gadd expressed interest in hearing from him since he enjoys wrestling.

Despite what might appear unexpected, he openly shared that one of his wishes involves going on a road trip with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, John Cena, and for good measure, Bret Hart.
He went on to say, ‘I’m not sure what the topic will be, but we’ll proceed with it.’ As for me, I’ll simply listen in as they converse.
In Baby Reindeer, a successful dark dramedy thriller, Richard is both the writer, actor, and originator – it being an adaptation of his own autobiographical one-man performance piece.
In this show, he portrays a character called Donny Dunn, which is a version of him, and he’s a bartender during the day while trying to make it big in comedy at night.
Among the regular patrons of his pub, there’s Martha – a fellow Indie Spirit award-winner named Jessica Gunning – who starts showing an inappropriate fixation on him, eventually resorting to stalking behaviors.
The series further explores his complex emotions towards his girlfriend Teri, a transgender American psychotherapist portrayed by Nava Mau (awarded Best Supporting Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards), as well as his challenging partnership with a television writer who mentors him, but also exhibits abusive behavior.
The series, which was released on Netflix, has been a hit with critics and fans alike.
Richard offered guidance to fellow celebrities encountering stalker issues, like Piers Morgan who recently disclosed a predicament reminiscent of a popular TV show plotline.

He encouraged those facing similar predicaments to persevere and not allow the situation to hinder them.
He acknowledged that there were moments in his life when the pressure became unbearable. At times, he doubted if there was any escape, but over time, things seem to improve. It almost sounds like a common saying, “Time heals all wounds,” but it truly seems to be the case.
Occasionally, during the night, you’ll see a flash of light, and over time these brief appearances grow larger until one moment you find yourself fully bathed in daylight, Richard explained.
He remarked, ‘It surprises me to admit this, but I never imagined it would conclude. Yet, I find comfort in the assumption that someday it will. In essence, I believe that hope is a powerful force. And if I were to summarize my thoughts, they would be, “Persevere…”‘
Additionally, Gadd discussed his upcoming project related to Baby Reindeer, titled Half Man – an HBO-BBC drama that he both created and will co-star in alongside Jamie Bell.
The versatile individual shared his desire for the upcoming show to break away from the deeply personal and autobiographical nature of Baby Reindeer.
Initially playfully hinting at a future venture into music, Richard described “Half Man” as a shift away from the personal narratives he’s previously explored, yet it retains an ominous tone.
Richard humorously suggested his next work would be a musical, but in reality, “Half Man” represents a change from the autobiographical and semi-biographical themes I’ve tackled before. However, it still maintains its gloomy character.
He clarified that although it continues to delve into the complexities of the human experience, it provides a more refreshing perspective for him as an author. It isn’t a complete shift away from his previous work, he added.

He indicated that it was likely still exactly as you would anticipate from me, but the topic could be unexpected for those who are fans of Baby Reindeer, as a possible alternative phrasing.
In my professional opinion, branching out and focusing on a project unrelated to your personal experiences can serve as a refreshing change. This new endeavor could prove beneficial for both mental health and creative growth.
His upcoming series charts 40 tumultuous years in the lives of brothers who are now estranged.
The story unfolds now as Ruben, played by Gadd, unexpectedly gatecrashes Niall’s wedding, triggering a journey into the tumultuous history of their past relationships dating back several decades.
On Saturday, Gadd was victorious at the Independent Spirit Awards, receiving the award for best lead performance in a brand-new scripted series. Meanwhile, Jessica Gunning took home the prize for outstanding breakthrough performance, and Nava Mau won the accolade for best supporting role.
In an amusing twist, the creator of “The Baby Reindeer” mentioned that he prepared a speech for the evening event. However, in good humor, he suggested that Sean Baker, the director of “Anora,” may have taken his words, as Baker’s heartfelt acceptance speech for best director was exceptionally impressive.
Additionally, he humorously pointed out that he felt his odds weren’t particularly strong once The Penguin began winning awards at preliminary events.
In contrast, while the supporting actress from that series, Cristin Milioti, received a nomination in the same category as Richard, the main actor, Colin Farrell, did not receive a nod for this year’s awards.
