Magnus wins Chessable Masters, three chess GMs qualify for EWC

As I sit here, basking in the glow of victory, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. I’ve just secured the Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters 2025 championship, and let me tell you, it was a hard-fought battle! This win not only solidifies my status as a top gamer, but also secures my qualification for the Esports World Cup alongside two other chess grandmasters. It’s moments like these that make all the late nights and endless strategy sessions worth it. Game on!

Magnus takes Chessable Masters

In the final of the Chessable Masters 2025 tournament, Magnus Carlsen played against Hikaru Nakamura. The first game was won by Magnus in 41 moves, but the following three games resulted in draws. This included a draw by repetition in move 10 during game 3. Magnus emerged victorious and secured the championship with a final score of 2.5 points to 1.5 points.

Remarkably, the Norwegian chess master went undefeated throughout the tournament. He played against Andre Esipenko, Yu Yangyi, Arjun Erigaisi, and Hikaru Nakamura twice, and emerged victorious in every encounter.

In addition, this victory marks Magnus’ initial championship with Team Liquid. He recently signed with the esports company, which Steve Arhancet, a co-CEO of the team, described as “one of the largest signings ever made by Team Liquid.

Three chess grandmasters at the 2025 Esports World Cup

Although Hikaru Nakamura didn’t win the championship, he will go up against Magnus Carlsen later in the year during the Esports World Cup.

Twelve leading chess players on the CCT Ranking Board are eligible for this tournament that serves as a substitute for the Tour Finals. With his victory at the Chessable Masters, Magnus Carlsen has ensured his participation in EWC. He will carry on representing Team Liquid during this event.

Hikaru Nakamura garnered 80 CCT Points following his second-place finish, which also qualified him for the EWC. Notably, he recently joined the Saudi Arabian esports team, Team Falcons, as well.

Ian Nepomniachtchi, the third grandmaster to secure a spot in the EWC, amassed 65 points from his third-place finish in the Chessable Masters. Prior to this tournament, Aurora Gaming had signed him on, and it’s anticipated that he will carry on representing them during the upcoming EWC later in the year.
