The Monkey ending explained: What’s up with that weird horseman?

The Monkey ending spoilers follow.

In the chilling horror-comedy “The Monkey,” directed by Osgood Perkins, death seems unfathomably absurd and unpredictable, as it is portrayed in this adaptation of a Stephen King short story.

The story revolves around twins Hal and Bill (portrayed by Theo James), who stumbled upon a toy monkey drummer in their dad’s possessions as kids. Regrettably, they found that whenever this monkey played its drums, someone met an untimely end.

25 years later, it seems the monkey they believed they had banished by dropping it into a well has resurfaced, once again wreaking havoc. However, the question remains – how has the monkey returned, and who might be orchestrating such events?

If you prefer not to confront graphic scenes, allow me to shed light on the thrilling finale of “The Monkey“, where I’ll clarify the mysterious appearance of the horseman, among other enigmatic aspects.

Major spoilers await if you haven’t seen The Monkey yet.

The Monkey ending explained

After the tragic and unconventional demise of his aunt Ida (she self-immolated and subsequently got skewered on a roadsign), Hal returns to the Maine town that he and Bill called home, following the passing of their shared mother.

While cleaning out Ida’s house, Hal learns from the realtor that the town has experienced some peculiar deaths in the last few days. Hal suspects the monkey is responsible, but doesn’t spot it at the house and presumes it was sold during the recent estate sale following Ida’s demise.

In due time, Hal uncovers the truth: his long-lost twin brother Bill is currently in possession of the monkey and orchestrating the deaths. Bill has been manipulating the monkey’s key, secretly hoping that Hal would be the one the monkey targets. The monkey doesn’t accept commands, but you can rest assured that you’re immune to its spontaneous lethality if you’re the one holding the key.

As a gamer, I realize that it was Hal who triggered the mechanism on the monkey, an action that ultimately led to our mother’s demise – a grim outcome he had once hoped would befall me. In a twisted turn of events, I persuade his son, Petey, to do the same, but despite our attempts, Hal remains unscathed.

Bill tries unsuccessfully to make the monkey drum without activating the switch, which instead infuriates the monkey. In response, the monkey continues to beat its drums relentlessly, leading to the death of everyone else in the town, leaving only Hal, Bill, and Petey alive.

Before Bill met his untimely demise at the hands of a falling bowling ball, shattering his skull, the brothers managed to make peace with each other.

Hal and Petey decide to take custody of the monkey to prevent others from using it, and as they exit the town that lies in ruins, they notice an odd figure on a horse with a pale gray coat. This individual seems to be dressed like a soldier from a revolution era.

So we get what you’re wondering, what’s up with the horseman? Let us explain.

What’s up with the horseman at the end of The Monkey?

in the middle, there was a white horse. The one sitting on it had a name written, ‘Death’; and Hades followed with him.

Throughout the film, Bill occasionally mentions the white horseman during his narration as The Monkey shifts to his perspective. This could signify two things: either Hal coming to terms with the fact that everyone eventually dies, or simply the grim reaper being particularly active given that most people in the town are now deceased.

As a gamer, I don’t think it’s fair to blame Bill for summoning the monkey, causing the apocalypse. It appears to be limited to this specific town, and there’s no indication that the other Horsemen of the Apocalypse are roaming about here.

However, seeing as The Monkey concludes with Hal leaving town, it’s possible that the monkey’s murderous rampage might not have come to an end.

The Monkey is out now in cinemas.
