Channel Seven in Turmoil: Abbey Gelmi’s Shocking Exit Amid Mass Presenter Exodus!
Sports broadcaster Abbey Gelmi has shared that she’ll be parting ways with Channel Seven following nearly two years in her position.
Since April 2022, Gelmi has served as the weekend sports newsreader. However, she shared with the Herald Sun on Friday that she plans to move forward to a new phase in her career.
She expressed that she’s benefited from countless remarkable experiences at Seven, yet she feels now is the perfect moment to embark on a new phase in her journey.
‘I’m forever grateful for the experience and life long friends gained.’
Gelmi recently stated that his departure from ABC’s Offsiders, which he was named as the new host in the previous month, was a mutually agreed upon separation.
Chris Salter, Director of Seven News, noted: ‘Abbey has reported on everything from the Olympics to Australian Football League, cricket, motor sports, and horse races.’
She excels in every area and ends her time at Seven with some cherished friendships that will last a lifetime. There’s no doubt she’ll achieve great things in her future endeavors.
This month saw the termination of Ben Davis’s employment with Channel Seven in Queensland, where he had served as the head of sports for a period of 30 years.
The veteran presenter, 50, confirmed that his contract has not been renewed.
Davis shared that management informed him, toward the end of this month, they believe he has performed his duties correctly, with no wrongdoing on his part.
In a post on LinkedIn, Davis, who is a married father of three, expressed his disappointment that his contract with Seven News was not extended. However, he clarified that the decision had no connection to his performance, skills, or capabilities; it was simply a matter of business.
Elsewhere in his post, Davis thanked viewers, family and colleagues.
He mentioned that the connections and bonds formed both on-screen and off-screen remain strong until today.
After Sonia Marinelli, the weekend weather presenter for Seven in Melbourne, announced her departure earlier this month, it was his turn to leave as well.

She announced that she will be leaving her position at 7News, as she and her spouse have chosen to embark on a significant lifestyle change, moving closer to the sea.
We’ve decided to embark on a journey with our four little ones along the eastern seaboard. This plan is something we’ve been contemplating for quite some time now.
Following years spent discussing the weather on television, I’m thrilled to step outside and experience it firsthand with my dearest ones.
Contrary to speculation suggesting a popular broadcast network was dismissing a weather presenter, Seven clarified that Marinelli chose to depart under her own conditions.
Marinelli is the latest in a series of popular presenters leaving Seven over the past year.
In August, Steve Hart, a seasoned reporter at 7News, decided to make a change and join the team at WIN News in Wollongong.
His departure followed Shane Webcke’s shock exit from the sports news desk the previous week.

Among seven staff members, their positions have either been downsized or eliminated as part of the company’s cost reduction measures over the last year.
7West Media made the difficult decision to dismiss 150 editorial team members, a move that affected well-known figures like Sharyn Ghidella, a Queensland newsreader, and Paul Burt, a seasoned weather reporter.
In a recent move, the new head of news and current affairs for Seven Network, Anthony De Ceglie, is swapping out section leaders from various regions with more youthful management personnel.
In each city – Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide – there’s a new face leading the news as fresh news directors take over. Additionally, new executive producers are now at the helm for Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise, and Spotlight.
