Martin Frizzell Quits This Morning Amid Wife’s Alzheimer’s Struggle
Martin Frizzell, head of “This Morning,” has announced his departure from the program at the end of this month, coinciding with Fiona Phillips sharing insights on her challenging journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
The chief of television, aged 66, declared his resignation following a decade as leader of a well-liked daytime program in November. Sources from ITV stated that his position was not suitable for Fiona’s health condition.
Originally, he indicated that he would step down in the spring season, however, his final day will be on Friday, February 28th.
It was confirmed yesterday that the current position of Associate Editor for This Morning, held by Vivek Sharma, will be taken over by him.
Sharma has spent a full two decades in her profession, with experience in shows like Loose Women, Lorraine, Good Morning Britain, and Steph’s Packed Lunch.
64-year-old Fiona, who went public with her Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2023, revealed plans to write and publish a book on living with Alzheimer’s alongside her spouse.
Titled Remember When it will be published on July 3.
Previously on GMTV, the host shared: “I want this book to give readers a glimpse into what life is like for someone battling Alzheimer’s.
‘How frightening and confusing it is. But also how much life can still bring joy and be valued.
Additionally, should you or a loved one find yourselves at the onset of Alzheimer’s, may this book offer a sense of solace. Please remember, you do not stand alone in this journey.
Martin initially crossed paths with Fiona during her tenure as a presenter at GMTV, while he served as their chief correspondent.
After only four weeks of dating, he proposed to her, and they got married in Las Vegas in 1997.
They now have two children together, Nathaniel and Mackenzie, who are both in their 20s.
While under Frizell’s leadership on This Morning, the program received numerous awards, yet it also became embroiled in a scandal surrounding Philip Schofield’s relationship with a junior coworker, resulting in a series of unfavorable news coverage for several months.
His replacement Vivek Sharma will taken over the reins in March.
Vivek mentioned that since he used to watch the show as a child, it feels incredibly special and respectful to now be the Editor for This Morning.
