Fiona Phillips Opens Up About Her ‘Frightening but Joyful’ Alzheimer’s Journey
Fiona Phillips posted an emotional update about her ongoing, both scary and uplifting struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Back in 2022, the beloved morning talk show host I adore so much, now at 64 years old, was informed she had Alzheimer’s. However, it wasn’t until the following year that she bravely chose to make this news public. Now, I can’t help but worry as she battles memory lapses already.
In a forthcoming book titled “Remember When,” Fiona will share insights about her life living with Alzheimer’s, collaborating closely with her spouse, Martin Frizell (formerly of This Morning), which is set to be published by Pan Macmillan on the 3rd of July.
She mentioned: ‘I hope this book offers some insight into the daily life experiences of living with Alzheimer’s.’
Experiencing a whirlwind of emotions? Indeed, it can feel daunting and perplexing, but remember, life has an extraordinary knack for offering joy even in the most challenging circumstances. If you or someone close is navigating the early stages of Alzheimer’s, I extend my heartfelt empathy. Rest assured, you are not on this journey alone. This book aims to provide a measure of solace and understanding during these times.
After receiving her diagnosis, she disclosed that she had been enrolled in a drug trial aimed at alleviating her symptoms. She claims that this treatment seems to be effective for her so far.
According to an interview with Women&Home, Fiona shared that she is currently participating in a medical study, and the early results appear promising.
I’m participating in an innovative study aimed at discovering a potential cure. The experiment uses a recently developed medication alongside a placebo, and I’m unaware which substance I’ve been given.
During my appointment in October for a routine six-month check-up, they conducted cognitive assessments to gauge the current state of my cognitive abilities. The results indicated that my cognitive status remained unchanged compared to the previous year.
I’m optimistic that the medication seems to be keeping the illness stable. I wouldn’t prefer being part of the study, but I’m incredibly thankful for my participation.
‘I understand that there’s a potential for complications like brain hemorrhage, but given the possibility of significant benefits, I’m willing to take this step and serve as a test subject.’
Fiona, mother of two boys with Mark, left her numerous followers in awe when she disclosed that, similar to her own parents, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
However, the actress claims she’s “feigning” or “acting as if” she doesn’t have the disease, allowing her to continue living life to the fullest.
Despite the fact that her spouse, Mark, expresses concerns when he’s at work, she continues to catch up with friends over coffee and enjoy strolls.

Though I acknowledge that I can continue living a fantastic life, I’m choosing to focus on moving forward at the moment. I’m trying to set aside and minimize the impact of recent events in my life for now. There’s still a lot I aspire to accomplish.
Martin often frets about my activities during his working hours and evenings, as well as what I might be eating. However, it’s important to note that I’ve changed. I’m not just giving in; instead, there are many exciting prospects ahead that keep me motivated.
Fiona, who parted ways with GMTV back in December 2008 due to personal family matters, stated that since receiving her diagnosis, she is now more open and direct in expressing herself towards others, using the word ‘honest’ to describe this change.
She added that nobody has reacted badly to her more candid comments.
‘Martin says I have no filter now, and it’s true,’ said Fiona.

I often say amusing things. Being more truthful with others isn’t something I view as a downside.
In general, I haven’t encountered any negative responses, and more often than not, I find myself praising others for their actions or qualities – thoughts that I might have had before but never verbalized.
Martin can sometimes become frustrated, but everyone has grown accustomed to it by now. Despite my diagnosis being serious, it isn’t entirely hopeless. There’s still plenty of brightness amidst the shadows, and it’s essential to keep searching for it.
