Keeley Hawes Shares Surprising Truth About Being Called ‘Mrs. Durrell’ in Public!
Keeley Hawes shared that people often address her as “Mrs Durrell” when they see her on the street, as she talked about her acting journey during a conversation held on Wednesday.
In a heartfelt conversation about her professional journey, the actress, aged 49, found it genuinely complimentary when her work is acknowledged and appreciated by others.
In the seventh season of Dish from Waitrose, Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett shared a laugh as she playfully mentioned that she had spent considerable time in various households.
On the popular television show, Keeley played the role of Louisa Durrell, a character inspired by Gerald Durrell’s memories from his eccentric family’s youth spent on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu, as depicted in his memoirs.
The series aired from 2016 through its concluding episode in 2019, yet the performance she delivered continues to be vividly recalled by viewers.
She mentioned: ‘As soon as they have you in their homes, people tend to feel like they already know you. I’m often referred to as Mrs. Durrell by many.’

In a more straightforward way, the actress said: “People often address me as ‘Mrs. Durrell!’ This surprises me sometimes, as they’ll even do it among racks of clothes and exclaim, ‘Mrs. Durrell!’ It’s always nice to be recognized in such a way.
‘Similar to shows such as Bodyguard or Line of Duty, with situations involving shouts from vehicles that become a temporary cultural phenomenon. It’s incredibly thrilling, heartwarming, and delightful.’
‘Just like in Bodyguard or Line of Duty, there are scenes with people yelling from vans which seem to capture the public’s attention for a while. It’s an exhilarating experience, and it feels quite special and enjoyable.’
Currently, Keeley is the leading actress in the series titled “Miss Austen.” After watching only the first episode, viewers have highly commended it as an ideal choice for Sunday evening entertainment.
In the initial broadcast of the BBC series on February 2, Keeley takes on the role of Cassandra, while Rose Leslie from Game of Thrones plays Isabella Fowle.
The four-part drama delved into the sibling relationship between Cassandra and Jane Austen, a renowned author, and was shot primarily within and surrounding the Home Counties.
Drawing inspiration from Gill Hornby’s acclaimed novel, award-winning screenwriter Andrea Gibb reimagines the story of Cassandra’s infamous act of destroying Jane’s letters, delving into the complex dynamics between the two sisters.
The program has already garnered rave reviews from audiences, with numerous individuals expressing their opinions on various social media platforms.
On X, Keeley Hawes continues to inspire us, while Rose Leslie delivers an excellent performance. However, the truly remarkable casting choice is that of Patsy Ferran portraying the iconic character Jane.

She seems to me very much like I picture Jane Austen – a delightful choice for a peaceful Sunday evening, showcasing the BBC’s excellent production quality. #MissAusten
I wholeheartedly concur with that sentiment! ‘Masterpiece’ indeed, a testament to the brilliance of the entire cast. Keeley Hawes in #MissAusten was simply captivating, making for an unforgettable Sunday viewing, already available on iPlayer.
A person wrote: ‘My curiosity led me to #MissAusten, and I’m glad it did. It was tenderly crafted, skillfully produced, with exceptional performances by everyone, but particularly Keeley Hawes (as usual) and Synnøve Karlsen.’
Miss Austen has aired in the same year as the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth.
Additional actors involved are Phyllis Logan from Downton Abbey, Max Irons, Alfred Enoch, Jessica Hynes (also known as Tamsin Greig), The Crown’s Kevin McNally, Mirren Mack, and several others.
This recently released period drama was helmed by director Aisling Walsh and produced by Stella Merz. It’s a collaborative production between Bonnie Productions and MASTERPIECE, along with the BBC and Federation Stories.
