Trending Swedish thriller branded “suffocating” lands impressive Rotten Tomatoes score
Swedish Netflix thriller The Åre Murders has landed a positive score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A newly-added crime drama on Netflix has garnered high praise, earning a noteworthy 83% approval rating from critics on a review aggregation platform. Viewers seem to share the sentiment, as they’ve rated the series at 80%.
12 days after its debut on February 6, “The Åre Murders” continues to hold strong in the top ten charts of the streaming service, currently sitting at the third spot.
Titled “The Åre Murders“, this series is known for its gruesome killings, heavy atmosphere, and a chill that makes you feel the frozen fingers of the characters. The story primarily revolves around detective Hanna Ahlander, played by Carla Sehn.
After a split and being put on leave at work, Hanna chooses to depart from Stockholm and journey to her sister’s vacation residence in picturesque Åre.
The situation becomes eerily ominous as per the summary, when “a young woman disappears during the cold night of Lucia (Swedish tradition)”.
Hanna instinctively delves into the mystery at hand. With a difficult domestic situation and a short-handed police force, Officer Daniel Lindskog (Kardo Razzazi) initially resists her involvement. However, the key issue lies in whether they can rely on one another during their joint investigation.
The story “The Åre Murders” is derived from the globally acclaimed novels of Swedish writer Viveca Stentwo, encompassing her works titled “Hidden in Snow” and “Hidden in the Shadows”.
Regarding the adaptation, one critic commended its authenticity within the Nordic Noir genre by saying: “The Åre Murders encapsulates all the elements characteristic of the Nordic Noir genre. Add some stunning visuals of Sweden’s northern landscapes, and we are fully immersed in this investigation.
One person praised detective duo Hanna and Daniel, commenting: ‘They aren’t like comic book heroes. Instead, they rely on their feelings and intelligence, and they’re both incredibly intelligent. They work well together, and the cases they tackle are captivating but never too far-fetched or forced.’
The Åre Murders is available on Netflix now.
