10 Years Later, Taylor Sheridan’s Neo-Western ‘Hell or High Water’ Blasts Onto Netflix

Taylor Sheridan clearly loves Westerns. He’s the creative force behind popular shows like Yellowstone and its spin-offs, as well as films such as Wind River and The Last Cowboy. He’s also written other hits like Sicario, Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and Tulsa King, and often brings the feel and familiar elements of classic Westerns into his work. Many consider his 2016 film, Hell or High Water – starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster as outlaws pursued by aging lawmen – to be his best take on the genre. And now, you can watch it on Netflix.

Starting February 1st, you’ll be able to watch the critically acclaimed film Hell or High Water on Netflix. Written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by David Mackenzie, the movie stars Chris Pine and Ben Foster as two brothers who resort to bank robbery to solve their financial troubles. Hot on their trail are Texas Rangers, played by Jeff Bridges and Gill Birmingham. The cast also includes Katy Mixon, Dale Dickey, Amber Midthunder, and Margaret Bowman, who delivers a memorable performance as the “T-Bone Waitress.” Sheridan even makes a brief appearance as a cowboy. Here’s what the movie is about:

Okay, so picture this: it’s a really compelling story about a divorced dad, Toby, who’s just trying to save the family ranch and provide for his son. His brother, Tanner, is a bit of a wild card – ex-con, quick to anger, not afraid of a gun. They decide the only way to stop the bank from taking everything is to rob it themselves. But things get complicated because a Texas Ranger, Marcus, is on the case. He’s practically retired, but he’s one tough, smart lawman who isn’t about to let them get away with it. It’s a classic setup – desperate guys, one last score, and a determined lawman standing in their way. I’m already hooked!

Released in 2016, Hell or High Water wasn’t a blockbuster hit, but it performed well for a low-budget independent film, especially considering its well-known actors. The movie earned over $37 million despite only costing $12 million to make. It also received critical acclaim, earning four Academy Award nominations in 2017, including nods for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor for Jeff Bridges.
