Spoilers for The Boys season five episodes one and two follow.
The fifth and final season of The Boys started with a major surprise: the death of a key character. In the show’s two-episode premiere, A-Train (played by Jessie T. Usher) was killed by Homelander (Antony Starr) after leaving Vought and joining forces with The Boys.
A-Train put himself in danger and rescued Hughie during a fight with Homelander at Freedom Camp, then quickly left the area.
Despite his incredible speed, A-Train couldn’t escape Homelander, who quickly caught up and killed him. This was a significant loss, as A-Train had been a character on the show since the beginning.
From the very beginning of The Boys, A-Train has been a central figure. His reckless use of super speed resulted in the death of Hughie’s girlfriend, Robin, which set Hughie on a path of revenge.

In an interview with Variety, Eric Kripke, the showrunner of The Boys, discussed why he chose to eliminate a popular character at this stage in the series.
He started by saying they had a long discussion about keeping A-Train on the show for at least the first three episodes.
The writers challenged me, pointing out that I kept emphasizing no character was safe. They urged me to prove it by killing off a major character in the very first episode, to genuinely create a sense of danger for the rest of the season.
You know, everyone was right about A-Train. His whole story arc was actually really good, and Jessie totally nailed it. He brought so much depth to the character, making him feel really human and, honestly, kind of soulful. It’s crazy to think he’s the one who kicks everything off, and then ends up saving Hughie in the end. It was a great full-circle moment.
Kripke highlighted a favorite moment: when the character skillfully avoids a woman, a stark contrast to how he immediately ran through Robin when they first met.
The last time we saw him, he rescued a woman, showing how much he cares about others. It really highlights how heroic he’s become.
The final episodes promise chaos as Homelander fully embraces his unpredictable and self-centered desires. Meanwhile, Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie find themselves held captive in a place called a ‘Freedom Camp’.
Annie is desperately trying to fight back against the powerful Supes, but Kimiko is missing. When Butcher returns with a dangerous virus capable of eliminating all Supes, he unleashes a series of events that will drastically and permanently alter the world for everyone.
The message then excitedly promises a dramatic and intense finale, saying, “This is it, everyone! Something huge and incredibly wicked is about to happen.”
