The Pine House in Ottsjö Marks Note Design Studio’s Architectural Debut
Perched amidst the rugged mountains of Ottsjö, Sweden, south of Åre Ski Resort, Note Design Studio has finished its inaugural large-scale architectural venture – a residence tailored for a pair who cherish nature.
Established in 2008, Note Design Studio has always adopted a versatile methodology, and this particular project signifies their transition into the realm of architecture. Co-founder Johannes Karlström explains that this project symbolizes a change from modifying pre-existing conditions to constructing an architectural foundation ourselves.
Effortlessly blending with its surroundings, this house showcases a unique and contemporary style. Its design features three identical structures with pitched roofs, artfully connected yet slightly displaced for optimal views of the western mountains. This arrangement mirrors the terrain’s natural curves, resulting in a smooth and instinctive floor plan.

A sleek suspended bridge ties it all together, fostering effortless interplay while maximizing space utilization. The end product is a vibrant, sociable gaming haven that’s also incredibly practical.
The significance of materiality is evident in both appearance and functionality. The exterior, crafted from raw Norrland heartwood and differing panel sizes, adds nuanced textural richness, and local Norwegian marble harmonizes with the pine, emphasizing a bond to the locale. Designed to endure extreme mountain weather, the slanted roof is shaped to handle heavy snowfall and admits sunlight, while also highlighting stunning vistas.
