Kieran Culkin’s Shocking Last-Minute Attempt to Quit Movie Due to Family Concerns
On Sunday evening, it was Jesse Eisenberg who picked up the esteemed BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor instead of Kieran Culkin, as Kieran himself was unable to attend.
It has recently come to light that the reason he missed the grand event was the very same problem that once put his entire film participation at risk.
The director and writer of the film received their fifth honor, which was accepted on Kieran’s behalf. At first, Jesse jokingly commented about the growing trend during a packed event at The Royal Festival Hall in London.
‘Hi, thanks again,’ he said. ‘This is also the fifth award I’ve accepted on Kieran’s behalf.
It aligns with my beliefs, suggesting our lives intersect, but his seems to be approximately 27% more favorable than mine.
In a revealing moment, Jesse, aged 41 and portraying the character of David Kaplan, disclosed the genuine cause behind his fellow cast member’s frequent unavailabilities.

Kieran wished he could be here as we spoke this morning. Unfortunately, he’s in New York, attending to a family member who isn’t well.
He’s incredibly dedicated as a father, showing such commitment that he almost quit working on my film just two weeks prior to filming, preferring to stay with his children instead.
‘It’s real, it’s beautiful and it’s admirable his devotion to his family.
He’s among those exceptionally gifted individuals who, through a stroke of good fortune or cosmic alignment, manage to keep their priorities straight.
42-year-old Kieran shared some behind-the-scenes details about the movie’s chaotic production during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show in December. He confessed that, following an unusual auditioning experience, he considered withdrawing from the project at the last minute.
He said to Graham, “He never auditioned me or saw me in any work before, but he claimed he knew me and had previously met me on two occasions.
Jesse said: “He has a unique quality about him – just observe that quality. I can’t express it any other way, but it simply felt perfect. He’s incredible.
Initially, Kieran mentioned, “I attempted to withdraw from this movie at some stage. Oops,” but Jesse corrected him saying, “No, it was exactly two weeks prior to our shoot, not ‘at one point’.

As a lifestyle expert, I can share an interesting behind-the-scenes tidbit: It turns out my colleague was unaware of my attempts to exit the project. The production team kept me shrouded in mystery about the situation. I’m grateful for that decision because it resulted in us creating a fantastic film together.
In the film “Succession,” Kieran Culkin’s character won the award for his portrayal of Benji Kaplan, outshining fellow cast member Jeremy Strong and other notable actors such as Edward Norton, Yura Borisov, Guy Pearce, and Clarence Maclin.
In the past, Jesse has been the recipient of Kieran’s trophies from the Critics’ Choice Awards, National Society of Film Critics Award, and the National Board of Review Awards.
In the late hours of the evening, Jesse was also awarded the Best Original Screenplay prize and delivered a heartfelt speech from the stage.
As the ecstatic recipient of the second place award for that incredible movie, let me confess: “I chose not to contribute a single word in the script, for I never dared to believe I’d be standing here with this honor in my hands.
‘I want to share this with my wife, who didn’t come because she didn’t think I’d win.’
During the 2025 BAFTA ceremony, the Conclave won a total of four awards, which included the prestigious Best Film Award and the Outstanding British Film Award.
Amongst a lengthy roster of 10 contenders, Conclave emerged victorious in the main award categories, further bolstering their existing awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.
In an emotional moment after winning the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, director Edward Berger expressed, “It’s such a tremendous honor to be recognized among these esteemed British films, yet I am not even a native here! I feel incredibly welcomed in your community.
In these contemporary times, I find myself deeply concerned about the state of democracy. Once-unifying institutions have unfortunately transformed into tools that divide us further.
Occasionally, it can be challenging to maintain hope in such circumstances. However, it’s precisely these moments that inspire us to create films, and so, we crafted this film for you.
The grandest movie event in Britain resumed, graced by actor David Tennant as the emcee, alongside various guest presenters ready to bestow awards throughout the evening.
