‘There is much to be afraid of’: Carl Lumbly on the fraught politics of ‘Captain America’

Title “Captain America: A New Era” revolves around Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, taking center stage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the inaugural Black Captain America. Accompanying Mackie on this pioneering adventure is Carl Lumbly, who previously etched his name in superhero history three decades ago by portraying a Black superhero.

In this rephrased version, the character Lumbly portrays Isaiah Bradley, a soldier enhanced with superpowers who is the sole remnant of a brutal military project that sadly took the lives of 300 African American soldiers. Previously, this seasoned actor has embodied Bradley in the 2021 Disney+ series titled “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which unfolds following the events where Wilson (also known as Falcon) inherited Captain America’s shield.

In the recently released movie that debuted on Friday and currently leads the holiday weekend earnings, Bradley leads a peaceful existence as the proprietor of a boxing gym. However, his tranquil life is disrupted when he’s tasked with the mission to eliminate U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford.

The part offers a rich opportunity for Lumbby, as he left a lasting impact by portraying the first Black superhero on television in the Fox 1994 drama “M.A.N.T.I.S.

In a different turn of events, the crime-fighting persona belonged to Dr. Miles Hawkins, a remarkable biophysicist who found himself paralyzed following a shooting incident during a city uprising while he was rescuing a young child. Post this unfortunate event, Hawkins invented an exoskeleton that allowed him to move beyond his wheelchair.

In his role as M.A.N.T.I.S., Hawkins displayed incredible agility, outrunning storms, jumping clear of chasing automobiles, and effortlessly hurling wrongdoers across the landscape. His toolkit included a state-of-the-art vehicle capable of soaring through the skies and navigating underwater depths.

Lumbly shared, “Ever since I joined the MCU, many folks have approached me expressing their pride, and not forgetting to mention it, some still recall ‘M.A.N.T.I.S.’ with a chuckle.

The Fox series managed to complete only one season, which was surrounded by controversy. Following the initial broadcast of the pilot episode, executive producer Sam Raimi (known for “The Evil Dead” and “Spider-Man” franchises), who had penned the pilot, was dismissed, along with four African American secondary characters, prior to the show’s official debut.

In a recent controversy, new producers have faced allegations of racism by an advocacy group and two initial cast members. They claimed that the diversity within the cast had been diminished significantly, and the overall tone of the series underwent a drastic shift from the pilot episode to downplay Black identity and potentially attract a larger white audience.

At this time of political ambiguity in Hollywood, the novel “Brave New World” finds itself in a delicate position. Studio executives, such as those at Disney, are trying to tread a balanced path. However, the Trump administration’s criticism and intensified focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have grown more pronounced. This has led to increased scrutiny of films, TV series, and their creators, with heightened levels of debate still prevalent.

For instance, Mackie has faced criticism from some conservatives over his comments about the Captain America character, and the film has been criticized as being too “woke” or having similarities to Ross and Trump that are unfairly pointed out.

During a telephone conversation, Lumbly discussed his characterization of Bradley, the public reaction to “Brave New World”‘s political stance, and the enduring impact of “M.A.N.T.I.S.” in an engaging manner.

What has being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe been like?

Experiencing an exhilarating adventure is something I truly enjoy with this character, appreciating his essence and significance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The narrative revolves around a series of government actions leading to tragic outcomes for a band of African-American men who aspired to improve their country. Unfortunately, they were deceived and abandoned. Remarkably, Isaiah is the lone survivor, symbolizing the sacrifices made by those mercilessly taken. Although it’s a challenging tale, I feel honored to be part of it in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” and I’m thrilled that this narrative expands in this movie.

What has it been like working with Anthony?

Anthony is an exceptional actor, and I’ve recently discovered his leadership skills are equally impressive. Yet, he manages to keep things light-hearted and enjoyable. There’s a palpable sense of joy in the way Anthony approaches situations. He strives to ensure not just fun, but inclusion for everyone involved. In essence, he leads with an open, compassionate heart.

As a movie reviewer, I must confess that my heart skipped a beat when I discovered that the character of Isaiah would be attempting an assassination on the president. This revelation certainly added a thrilling layer of suspense to the plot and had me eagerly anticipating how this dramatic turn of events would unfold on screen.

After the challenging experience, Isaiah chuckles. Having made a significant impact in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” he assumed he could revert to a semblance of normality. However, the world as Sam perceives it is one he yearns to trust, but he’s hesitant about his ability to do so. He’s back with his boxing gym and enjoys his freedom, yet the idea of giving all that up for some form of retribution or misguided justice seems implausible. Upon initial observation, it appears to be a complex situation to navigate. But if there is a way to handle it, what might that approach be?

Absolutely! The film ‘Captain America: A Fresh Universe’ does have a scene after the credits. This scene offers a tantalizing glimpse of what lies ahead within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So what do you make of the comparisons between the movie and the political climate in the country?

The similarities that viewers perceive weren’t present when the movie was initially conceived or produced. Instead, these elements emerged simultaneously with the film, or the film was created to address the issues we currently encounter in the world. It’s as if history and our filmmaking process have synchronistically aligned, much like the art of alchemy.

What do you feel is the significance?

In simpler terms, the title “Brave New World” emphasizes not so much on our mistakes or shortcomings, but rather on facing reality, truth, and then pushing ahead with the understanding that there’s plenty to fear, yet we persist. I believe this is the film’s message. The movie also touches upon themes of love, kindness, and understanding.

Anyone who watches “Captain America: Brave New World” will carry their unique interpretation of the movie in their minds to replay later. The Captain America that I witnessed filled me with immense pride, offering a sense of hope during challenging times. The theme of unity lies in joining forces with our fears and finding the courage to connect.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but bring up “M.A.N.T.I.S.” It’s amazing to see how deeply this series resonated with viewers, isn’t it? Even years after its initial release, people are still talking about it!

On that particular occasion, the crowd experienced an event that left a lasting impression on them. It’s quite astonishing and rewarding to look back and recognize its occurrence. I am aware that both M.A.N.T.I.S and Isaiah hold significant places within my collection of memories.

What do you feel is the legacy of that character?

The trio of M.A.N.T.I.S., Isaiah, and Sam Wilson are rooted in love, but it’s not a given. They each have valid reasons to harbor resentment or anger. However, whatever trials they faced—transformations, devastations, confinements, rejections—didn’t erode the love within them. They stood resilient. Their hearts were void of malice. Malice represents submission; it signifies surrendering the control and power that they possess.
