Aubrey Plaza Returns to the Stage After Tragic Loss

As a fervent admirer, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of anticipation when Aubrey Plaza graced the screen for her initial public appearance following her husband Jeff Baena’s passing, during the grand SNL 50: The Anniversary Special.

On a Sunday, the actress stepped onto the stage momentarily to present musical performers Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard during the extended broadcast that was aired on both NBC and Peacock.

She bypassed the glamorous red carpet leading up to the event held at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

For the initial time after her spouse’s passing, the former Parks and Recreation actress donned a black jacket, trousers, and a tie-dye top, seemingly paying tribute to her late husband with this choice of attire.

Her appearance comes six weeks after her late husband died from suicide at age 47 on January 3.

On January 21, 2023, she had previously appeared as a host in an episode of a long-lasting satirical comedy show.

At the beginning of the year, Baena died at their marital home in Los Angeles. 

Three days following his passing, Plaza finally spoke up, joining forces with the family to release a unified statement.

The incident is heart-wrenchingly unfortunate. We extend our sincere thanks to all those who have shown kindness by offering assistance, the message conveyed.

‘Please respect our privacy during this time.’

In that very week, it had been planned for Plaza to bestow an award at the 2025 Golden Globes ceremony on January 5th. However, she withdrew from the event following the demise of her spouse.

At the awards ceremony, Brady Corbet expressed his sympathies and goodwill towards Plaza upon receiving the Best Director accolade for The Brutalist.

‘Tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family,’ he said during his acceptance speech. 

Baena served as both writer and director during the production of the film where Plaza performed, which happened to be Baena’s first directorial venture titled “Life After Beth.

They started dating in 2011 after meeting during a game of Balderdash.

2017 saw Plaza discussing their mutual passion for cinema, resulting in joint ventures on various projects.

She expressed to Page Six about ten years back, “We’re really passionate about films.” This enthusiasm is the reason behind our collaborative filmmaking efforts.

Three years later, they collaborated on their horror-comedy Life After Beth. 

Without much fanfare, the pair, who generally preferred privacy in their relationship, unexpectedly got married in a hastily arranged ceremony amidst the ongoing pandemic.

In 2021, Plaza confirmed they had officially become husband and wife one year earlier. 

In a casual manner, she announced on Instagram that Baena is her beloved spouse by affectionately calling him “my darling husband,” prior to the premiere of their film “Spin Me Round” in 2022.

She boasted about her dear spouse, as he came up with another movie idea that would once again lead us on a mischievous adventure in Italy, as she put it back then.

Later, she revealed details about their surprise backyard ceremony during her visit on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

She referred to their wedding as “informal and bohemian” since they unexpectedly got married, donned handmade tie-dye sleepwear, and celebrated their decade-long union on that special day.
