With filming for the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled to begin this summer, writer and director James Gunn has firmly refuted a recent report claiming three well-known actors were cast in the film.
On Wednesday, Deadline initially reported that Ella Purnell, Adria Arjona, and Marisa Abela were being considered for the role of Maxima. However, James Gunn quickly refuted the report on Threads, prompting Deadline to update their story.
Deadline’s reporting on this is inaccurate and poorly done. I used to respect their journalism, but I’m disappointed by this piece. We would have immediately corrected the information if anyone had asked us to review it beforehand.
I’ve known Adria for years, ever since I worked with her on The Belko Experiment. I really like Marisa and Ella’s work, but surprisingly, I’ve never actually met them.

So, after James Gunn shared what he did, Deadline actually took out the names of Javicia Leslie and Xochitl Gomez as contenders for the role of Maxima. It looks like Ana de Armas is still possibly involved, but now she’s joined by Grace Van Patten, Sydney Chandler, and Eva De Dominici – some new faces to potentially play the part! It’s all getting pretty exciting.

Following James Gunn’s recent statements, Deadline has added a note to the top of their story explaining their reporting process. They state the story went through their standard editorial checks and has been updated after a review of new information about the actors involved.
Nothing else has changed, and this still applies to the character of Maxima. However, if that’s the case, Maxima won’t have a significant part in the movie. James Gunn told a fan on Threads that they have one actor left to cast, but that all the main roles have already been announced for the sequel.
He also clarified he hasn’t officially confirmed the role being cast as Maxima. This has sparked speculation among DC fans that actress Xóchitl Arjona might be the new Wonder Woman for the DC Universe, especially since James Gunn previously said she “would be a great Wonder Woman” (according to Extra TV).

David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will return as Superman (Clark Kent) and Lex Luthor in the upcoming Man of Tomorrow sequel, and Rachel Brosnahan is likely to reprise her role as Lois Lane.
Aaron Pierre is returning as John Stewart from the series Lanterns, and Lars Eidinger will be playing the iconic Superman villain, Brainiac.
Man of Tomorrow is released in cinemas on 9 July 2027.
