Jesse Eisenberg Overcomes Anxiety to Collect Kieran Culkin’s Fifth BAFTA Award

Known for his privacy, Jesse Eisenberg had to conquer his anxiety to receive the Best Supporting Actor BAFTA that his A Real Pain costar Kieran Culkin won on Sunday.

Jesse, a 41-year-old individual known for writing, directing, acting in, and openly discussing his struggles with anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, stepped onto the stage to announce that this was the fifth award he had accepted on behalf of Succession actor Kieran.

He quipped, “Hey, thank you once more. This makes the fifth time I’m accepting an award for Kieran. It seems to verify my belief that our lives overlap, yet his is a significantly enhanced version of mine by half.

Previously, Jesse has been the recipient of several awards that Kieran won, including the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, the National Society of Film Critics Award, and the National Board of Review Awards.

In the previous year, attending the premiere of our shared film at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, I, as a seasoned observer of the entertainment world, couldn’t help but notice an unusual display from my fellow actor, Jesse, who was visibly ‘nervous’ or ‘shaking’ on the red carpet at the tender age of 42.

In the year 2017, Jessie, along with his wife Anna Strout, welcomed their son named Banner. He expressed that transitioning into fatherhood has been beneficial in managing his anxiety. Moreover, he disclosed that at the age of 11, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

At a 2019 Child Mind Institute gathering in New York, he expressed the following sentiment: “In my opinion, there’s no superior strategy for maintaining mental wellness than focusing on genuine concerns. And when you become a parent, your worries can only center around authentic issues.

I strive to avoid indulging in behaviors that could potentially make my son anxious, as I understand such actions may not be beneficial. I recognize that while it might seem comforting in the immediate situation when my child seems worried, such actions could have harmful effects in the future.

Jesse expressed that if he could talk to his past self, he’d convey two pieces of advice. Firstly, it’s essential to remember that those feelings aren’t the most devastating things in existence, despite how overwhelming they might seem. It may appear as though this sense of dread is eternal and that any alternative would be preferable to this emotion.

Instead, he noted: “However, it’s possible that this anxiety you have could signal other advantageous traits such as sensitivity towards the world, empathy, or even a unique perspective on life that could prove beneficial in the long run.

So far, during the 2025 BAFTAs, Conclave has won four awards, notably taking home the prestigious Outstanding British Film Award.

Amidst a formidable lineup of 10 contenders, I found myself part of the triumphant Conclave team, clinching the distinct honor in an exceptional category. This latest accolade joins our earlier achievements, including three prestigious awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Director.

Accepting the BAFTA award for Outstanding British Film, director Edward Berger expressed his deep gratitude: ‘It’s an immense privilege to be recognized among such esteemed company, even though I’m not a native here! With an emotional acceptance speech containing strong language, Zoe Saldana gratefully received the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in the Mexican film titled Emilia Perez.

The renowned actress, aged 46, found herself unexpectedly taken away from the camera after exclaiming a series of profanities (‘darn’, ‘darn’, ‘darn’) in response to being rushed during the countdown.

Zoe wept profusely while receiving the award, acknowledging that it felt incredibly validating and a great privilege to receive an award, especially after being informed by dialect coaches earlier that her British accent might not be effective.
