Dannii Minogue: ‘We Were Going to Lose Kylie’ to Breast Cancer
Dannii Minogue recently shared insights into the difficult period when her sibling, popstar Kylie, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005.
The 53-year-old Australian vocalist shared that she experienced a mix of sorrow and joy upon learning that her 56-year-old sibling had been given a cancer-free diagnosis after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.
As she rejoiced over the comeback of the artist known for Padam Padam, she shared with Stellar on Sunday that she was concurrently mourning her friend Laura, who had lost her life to cancer during the same period.
Reflecting on a distressing memory, I recall a time when Kylie’s health was critically ill, and it seemed as though we might have to say goodbye to her. That was Dannii’s account.
Although everyone was rejoicing at her recovery, I was mourning the loss of my dearest friend due to cancer. It was a time of both celebration and sorrow for me.
Dannii first revealed the private tragedy she suffered amid her sister’s recovery in October.
During an interview on Take 5 with Zan Rowe on ABC, the singer of “All I Wanna Do” became emotional while talking about Kylie’s struggle with breast cancer.
Overwhelmed with emotion, I can’t help but share the heart-wrenching journey my beloved idols, the iconic Minogue duo, have been through. Back in 2005, a diagnosis that was as shocking as it was severe, took its toll on them. This life-altering event tragically coincided with the passing of my dearest friend, adding layers of sorrow to their already challenging times.
In the midst of a concert tour, my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. As I recall, she had to be escorted offstage, leaving me quite emotional.
During her chemotherapy sessions, when she wasn’t feeling well at all, I was there with her. We found a way to lift our spirits by dancing to music together, which helped us both in her recovery. The power of music sustained us throughout this challenging time.
In 2005, during her global Showgirl: Greatest Hits tour, Kylie received a diagnosis of breast cancer.
A year after undergoing a partial breast removal surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy treatments, Kylie received a clean bill of health.
Later on, Dannii was invited by her sister to perform a duet with her on stage when she recovers, and the exhilaration of sharing the stage with Kylie a few months afterwards was simply amazing.
It was astonishing; you could sense the thunderous cheers from the crowd, and it resonated deeply within us, making it evident that they were showering us with love and encouragement.

Originally, the Melbourne-born celebrity later disclosed that her dearest companion, Laura, was similarly stricken with cancer and tragically passed away during the same period when Kylie herself was diagnosed and made a recovery.
Kylie, born in Melbourne, shared that her friend Laura faced cancer at the exact time Kylie was diagnosed and eventually recovered. Unfortunately, Laura lost her life during this same period.
Dannii shared that her sister battled cancer, won the fight, but it was quite an intense journey for our entire family. Later on, she mentioned that her friend Laura also went through cancer.
She stayed at my place, mentioning she had lower back discomfort. An hour later, I found her curled up in a fetal position. Later that day, she was admitted to the hospital and unfortunately, she didn’t return.
‘It was very hard to see her go through this.’
Dannii shared that those double misfortunes were an incredibly tough period for her, but she found the strength to persevere, thanks to her sister’s unwavering support.
Kylie has been quite transparent about the challenges she encountered during her fight against breast cancer, and in 2018, she encouraged her followers to make donations to a UK-based organization called Breast Cancer Care.
2014 saw Kylie openly discuss her diagnosis with Karl Stefanovic on 60 Minutes. She revealed that her cancer experience had instilled in her the importance of prioritizing self-care.
‘Someone had said to me at the time, “You need to be a little bit selfish,”‘ she said.
Although it’s generally against my character to act selfishly, the current circumstances call for such behavior. It’s important to let others tend to your needs at this time. And that’s exactly what I chose to do.
