An animated sequel you haven’t heard of is now one of the biggest movies ever

A less-known Chinese animated sequel has astonishingly climbed its way up to rank among the greatest films ever made.

The sequel to Ne Zha, titled Ne Zha 2, was recently launched exclusively in China and is already generating an astounding revenue of approximately $1.37 billion, equivalent to around 10 billion Chinese yuan.

It currently ranks as the third-highest-earning animated movie ever, and predictions suggest it could potentially surpass this year’s “Inside Out 2” to become the highest-grossing one, with estimated earnings of over $1.69 billion.

This week, the movie that’s hitting markets like North America is not only making its debut but also breaking records. It became the first film to earn over $1 billion in a single market after being released in China, and currently holds the title of the highest-grossing movie in China’s box office history.

Furthermore, this movie was the initial non-Hollywood production to earn more than a billion dollars, also holding the record for the highest-grossing film not in the English language.

Moreover, as reported by Maoyan, a Chinese firm (via Deadline), the movie Ne Zha 2 might possibly earn more than 16 billion yuan ($2.19 billion). If it does, this would place it among the top five highest-grossing films ever made.

The movie, adapted from the Chinese novel “Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi)”, is directed by Jiaozi (Yang Yu) and serves as a follow-up to the 2019 film “Ne Zha”.

The story unfolds with the characters Ne Zha and his companion Ao Bing, who, though their physical forms have been destroyed, continue to exist spiritually. With the aid of the powerful immortal Taiyi Zhenren, they undergo a transformation to reform their bodies. As they navigate through trials that potentially threaten the existence of mankind, the narrative unfolds.

Ne Zha 2 is out on limited release in the US now, while a UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
