The Handmaid’s Tale star to reprise role in spin-off series
Actress Ann Dowd, who played the role of Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” will be returning to the character for the upcoming spin-off series titled “The Testaments.
2019 saw the release of “The Testaments,” a sequel to Margaret Atwood’s highly successful 1985 dystopian novel, which serves as the foundation for the hit series. The series is set to resume for its last and sixth season in April.
As reported by “Deadline”, it appears that the television series based on the sequel novel is almost ready for production. It’s expected that Elisabeth Moss will once again play the character of Aunt Lydia.
Previously, Dowd shared her aspirations to rejoin the spin-off, but as of yet, no specifics about casting have been revealed.
Deadline also reports that Presumed Innocent actor Chase Infiniti has joined the cast as Agnes.
In a timeframe exceeding fifteen years since the occurrences in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the narrative unfolds, focusing on Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy. Their destinies interweave as they unearth the hidden truths of Gilead and join forces against its oppressive regime, revealing the resistance movements within.
Though the novel suggests Agnes could be June Osborne’s daughter due to their shared name (the same as Hannah’s, who is later adopted in Gilead), it remains unclear if Elizabeth Moss will resume her portrayal of June in the series.
The role of Daisy hasn’t been cast yet.
The announcement arrives following the release of a trailer for the last season of “The Handmaid’s Tale”, with the show set to resume airing on April 6th.
In the last season, June’s relentless courage and resolve draw her once more into the struggle to overthrow the oppressive regime of Gilead.
In a nutshell, Luke and Moira become part of the rebellion. Serena attempts to change Gilead’s system, while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia grapple with their past actions. Lastly, Nick encounters difficult trials concerning his moral fiber.
The television series ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ resumes on April 6th, exclusively on Hulu in the United States. In the UK, you can catch it on both Channel 4 and Amazon Prime Video.
