Captain America: Brave New World sets unwanted record after first reviews
The initial critiques for “Captain America: Brave New World” have unfortunately established a less-than-desirable milestone for the series.
The initial responses to the latest Marvel film featuring Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson as Captain America have been varied.
After all the critiques are in, the film has earned a 53% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the lowest score among the Captain America movie franchise.
2011’s “The First Avenger” earned an impressive 80%, whereas both “The Winter Soldier” from 2014 and “Civil War” from 2016 garnered top scores of 90% each.
In comparison, “Brave New World” ranks as the third lowest-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, with a rating lower than both “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” at 43% and “Eternals” at 47%.
As a gaming enthusiast, I should mention that while the movie’s soundtrack could potentially get better with more reviews, it’s not likely to surpass the exceptional level of Captain America: The First Avenger.
Here’s some of what the critics are saying:
Digital Spy
Eventually, “Captain America: Brave New World” may evoke a sense of familiarity, as it seems to follow a pattern we’ve seen before. Regrettably, it appears to be influenced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s plans for future “Avengers” films, potentially depriving us from fully appreciating Anthony Mackie in the “Captain America” movie he deserves.
Screen International
In ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, Anthony Mackie’s rugged persona shines, but the overall lack of energy in this follow-up leaves you yearning for an earlier time when Marvel movies seemed significantly more impactful.
The Daily Telegraph
It’s challenging to envision “Brave New World” appealing to the Marvel fanbase, mainly due to its lack of substantial elements for fans to be excited about. Instead, it seems more like a production made out of necessity when no better idea was available, even though the deadline still looms regardless.
The Hollywood Reporter
Regrettably, the movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” seems to be an underwhelming addition to the Marvel series. Its intricate plot appears to have been meticulously crafted, yet it lacks the spark of originality.
Empire
With its fast-paced and impactful style, this debut for the freshly minted Captain America offers a lot of promise, albeit with certain clumsy and conflicting scenes that prevent it from reaching true greatness.
In movie theaters starting Valentine’s Day, 2025: Captain America: A World Anew! Catch up on the first three Captain America films and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+.
