Mark Hamill Reveals Why Fans Are ‘Dejected’ Meeting Him in Real Life

He has played one of the most famous characters in film history.

However, renowned Star Wars figure Mark Hamill has shared the reason behind some disheartened encounters with his fans, as they find him disappointing due to feeling he hasn’t maintained his physical appearance.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: I first found fame portraying the heroic Luke Skywalker in the groundbreaking 1977 film. Later, I had the privilege of revisiting the role in The Empire Strikes Back (1981), Return of the Jedi (1983), The Force Awakens (2015), and more recently, The Last Jedi (2017).

Currently, Hamill has playfully commented that numerous younger admirers find it hard to fathom that he is indeed the actor who brought the character of the young Jedi and universe protector Luke from the original series to life.

On the Smartless podcast, he mentioned that a span of 20 to 30 years has passed, which means that those children who were small when it first emerged have grown up and become parents now.

In a scenario where you find yourself at an airport or similar place, you might encounter a child around the age of five or six, who seems to believe that Star Wars was created merely two weeks ago.

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you that when encountering individuals from a different era, it becomes challenging to pinpoint specific details like car models or fashion trends since they hail from a timeless realm. For instance, they might be met with a casual wave and an excited exclamation, “Look who’s here! It’s Luke Skywalker!” This shows that even though they may not understand our modern concepts of time, their appreciation for pop culture icons remains undiminished.

‘And they look at me in horror like, “God, what happened to this guy? He really let himself go”.

Hamill, who is a father of three, confessed that he’s only watched the five films from the nine-part Star Wars saga a mere two times. As such, he finds it challenging to identify with diehard Star Wars enthusiasts.

He explained: ‘I saw them when they came out, but I don’t go back and see them again.

To clarify, I initially watched Star Wars episodes I, Empire, and Jedi during their re-release as special editions in the cinema. However, I haven’t had a chance to watch them again since then.

It’s quite clear there’s a gap since I’ve interacted with them much less frequently, and in fact, far fewer occasions compared to how often their fans have encountered them.

‘They play the games, they read the books and they know way more about it.

‘I know I’ve disappointed people. I took a Star Wars quiz once and flunked it.’

In 2023, Mark mentioned during an interview with CBS that he currently finds no compelling reason to reprise the character of Luke Skywalker, yet he has not ruled out the possibility of revisiting the role in the future.

In simpler terms, Hamill expressed that he enjoyed his time as the Force-wielding character, but now feels it’s appropriate for him to move on from this role.

When queried about the possibility of his comeback, he replied: “To be honest, it’s not on my radar at the moment. But you know, ‘never say never’. They’ve got plenty more tales to spin without me.

When inquired about being known as Skywalker, he replied casually, “Sure, I guess. To be honest, it wasn’t something I anticipated. I simply aimed to earn a living while pursuing my passion.

And I mused, “Indeed, things might be even more challenging. Imagine if I were renowned for portraying Adolf Hitler exceptionally well, after all. But at least Luke is a commendable character!
