Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey and Outkast are Rock Hall nominees

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been nominated for the first time alongside some incredible artists – Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Outkast, Maná, and the late Joe Cocker – for induction into the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! What an honor it is to be part of this esteemed group.

In addition to the Class of 2025, the following artists are also nominated (all first-timers): The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, and Phish. Additionally, six acts who have previously been considered for induction are on the ballot: Mariah Carey, Cyndi Lauper, Oasis, Soundgarden, the White Stripes, and a joint entry for Joy Division and New Order (its later form).

The Class of 2025 also includes newcomers such as The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, and Phish. As a music enthusiast, I find it truly exhilarating to witness this dynamic evolution in the artist lineup. Once criticized for favoring older white male artists, the hall is now making strides towards inclusivity by diversifying its selections across gender, race, and musical genres such as rock, pop, R&B, grunge, hip-hop, post-punk, and rock en español. This shift not only enriches the music scene but also mirrors our society’s growing appreciation for diversity in artistic expression.

As a passionate moviegoer and music enthusiast, I’m always thrilled to witness artists who embody the essence of rock ‘n’ roll, crafting unique sounds that have left an indelible mark on generations and served as a catalyst for countless other musical journeys. Last year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honored some extraordinary figures in this legacy: Mary J. Blige, Cher, the Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest. Each of these inductees has made an indispensable contribution to the world of music, continuing the rich tradition of rock ‘n’ roll that continues to inspire us all.

A creative professional or musical group can be considered for entrance into the hall of fame 25 years following the debut of their initial commercially available recording. Nominations, decided upon by a panel of experts within the music industry, are subsequently put to a vote among over 1,200 musicians, executives, historians, and journalists.

This year’s nominees, such as Oasis and Outkast, have been quite active lately. Oasis, known for their feuding Gallagher brothers, plan a reunion tour this summer that has created much excitement. Outkast, the influential Atlanta hip-hop duo, saw André 3000 receive an unexpected nomination for Album of the Year at this month’s Grammy Awards for his jazz LP, “New Blue Sun.” Last autumn, Lauper announced a farewell tour. Meanwhile, Carey generated news headlines in October following her discussion with The Times about not being inducted into the hall during her previous nomination.

The fresh live record captures Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s initial concert series. As Stephen Stills puts it, “we were still getting the hang of our instruments.

She expressed, “Everyone was telling me they believed I would be accepted, and I was thrilled about it.” However, she continued, “Unfortunately, it didn’t come to pass. My lawyer, Allen Grubman, was the one who got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame before me.” She was referring to the fact that he received the Ahmet Ertegun Award in 2022.

In April’s end, we’ll reveal this year’s honorees. The official ceremony, however, won’t take place until fall, here in Los Angeles. The event scheduled for 2025 will be the third induction since the co-founder of our hall, Jann Wenner (formerly editor at Rolling Stone), stepped down from the organization following a 2023 New York Times interview where he made derogatory remarks about Black and female musicians.
