The “Married at First Sight” participant, Jacqui Burfoot, finally speaks out about her representation on the series.

In a candid, revealing conversation with Daily Mail Australia, the 29-year-old New Zealand attorney opened up about the true circumstances surrounding her tumultuous union with Ryan Donnelly, who is often referred to as a “warrior”.

In my perspective, as a lifestyle advisor, I must confess that the portrayal of my wedding to Ryan appeared somewhat uncomfortable, with the spotlight falling on what seemed like my reserved response during our vows.

However, as Jacqui suggests, this account may not tell the whole story, as the reality TV star claims they shared a unique connection right from the beginning.

She admitted that Ryan and I indeed maintained a very strong eye connection towards the end of the aisle, it was quite striking.

‘We did lock eyes, we were looking into each other’s eyes very intimately.

‘It’s a shame they’ve shown me looking away from Ryan when we did share that very special bond.’ 

Viewers might notice Jacqui appearing critical towards Ryan or having difficulty empathizing with him, yet she explains that crucial background information is lacking.

She said, “Most people only witness a small fraction of what truly happens. I had many issues that weren’t captured by the cameras.

I made it clear to the specialists exactly what I was looking for in a partner – someone who is mature, has emotional intelligence, is kind, and thoughtful.

‘And I felt like Ryan wasn’t quite the anchor at the end of the aisle that I was hoping for.’

Jacqui also insisted she came into the experiment with the positive intention to find true love.

She expressed the view that love is an action, and that it can be demonstrated by extending forgiveness, practicing patience, and exhibiting understanding.

‘That was my mindset from the start, and I really tried to embody that throughout my journey.’

Jacqui said her family also shared her fears that Ryan was not ready for marriage.

‘They were concerned that Ryan wasn’t marriage material. 

It appeared as though he frequently attended parties with friends, and I had concerns that perhaps I paired him with a social butterfly rather than someone looking for a serious relationship.

Among the striking disclosures made during Jacqui’s interview was her discussion on Ryan’s conduct off-set, specifically his approach towards women.

‘I was really battling,’ she admitted.

From the moment I crossed paths with him, his words were often harsh, focusing on criticisms of my physical features rather than offering kind compliments.

‘And it wasn’t just me – he was doing it to the women around me. 

I found myself repeatedly intervening with comments such as, “Let’s respect Katie here,” or, “Could we please refrain from inappropriate humor regarding personal matters?” to maintain a respectful conversation.

A significant revelation occurred when Ryan, during a sex education seminar for grooms, made an explicit and inappropriate remark regarding Jacqui’s personal life.

She admitted later on that it was at home when she realized he had made the inappropriate remarks about her, yet she wasn’t aware of the context at the time.

Last night, I personally witnessed something for the first time; up until now, I had been unaware of it.

‘I’m shocked, actually. 

‘It’s ten times worse than what he said to me privately.’

What hurt Jacqui the most was that Ryan never properly apologised.

‘To this day, he doesn’t understand what the issue was. 

‘The issue is that he was bagging me off to the boys and using it as an insult. 

‘I feel really hurt that he can’t acknowledge that.’ 

Instead of just the relationship issues, Jacqui expresses that it isn’t her editing that makes her feel ashamed or embarrassed, but rather Ryan’s remarks and the fact that no one spoke up in response.

She expressed, “I am a person, I’m somebody’s child, somebody’s sibling, and someday, I’ll become someone’s mother,” she said, her voice trembling.

‘I feel really exposed and vulnerable. 

However, it’s not the editing that creates this feeling for me; rather, it’s the manner in which Ryan discussed me and the fact that no one challenged him on it.

Jacqui also believes that the way the show has handled her relationship has been unfair.

She stated, “It’s hard not to intervene when people are being given a misleading account of the truth.

Several spectators often wonder why Jacqui chose to remain in the study, given that it was apparent her bond with Ryan was faltering based on evident indications.

‘I saw a lot of potential in Ryan,’ she admitted.

‘We had great times together, and there was a reason why we were working. 

To be truthful, during our honeymoon, there was an occurrence that made me question whether it would have been wiser for me to depart.

Even though it was painful, Jacqui asserts that she has no regrets, explaining, “I entered into a marriage and I gave it my all.

As for those who have criticised her, Jacqui remains open-hearted.

‘I love everyone. I understand why you’d want to hate me. 

‘Honestly, I don’t even like the person I’m seeing on TV,’ she admitted.

‘But I just wish everyone the best, and I hope that you can find peace in yourselves.’
