‘Mission: Impossible’ Debuts New Super Bowl Trailer
As a movie buff, I can’t help but notice that while the Super Bowl has its fair share of action, it doesn’t quite compare to the heart-stopping chase scenes in a Tom Cruise “Mission: Impossible” film.
This summer, you’ll find the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible series, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” Initially, it was announced as “Dead Reckoning Part Two,” but following its release in 2023, which had lower box office returns compared to the previous three Mission films and Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Studios decided to change the film’s title. It will no longer be referred to as “Dead Reckoning Part Two,” but rather as “The Final Reckoning.” Understood?
The movie’s release date was moved from summer 2024 to summer 2025 due to multiple work stoppages, providing additional time for the sequel and its daring stunts to be finalized. In the recently unveiled Super Bowl commercial for this film, Cruise is seen dangling from revolving biplanes, running extensively, and engaging in numerous risky-looking actions. Also, keep an eye out for references to earlier Mission: Impossible films – there are plenty of them!
This version attempts to preserve the original’s meaning while using simpler, more conversational language and adding a bit more context for those unfamiliar with the franchise.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:
Life’s tapestry is woven by the threads of our decisions, and Tom Cruise portrays Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Last Stand.
It seems we’re working with limited information here. Speaking of which, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” is set to hit the big screen on May 23rd.
The Most Anticipated Movies of 2025
Wolf Man
Title Date: January 17
Previously, Universal attempted a reboot of “The Wolf Man” (also known as “The Wolfman”), and unfortunately, it ended up being quite sleep-inducing. Apologies to Rick Baker for the effort put in. However, this new version has an advantage that could potentially make it more exciting – Leigh Whannell. Known for his skillful writing and directing, Whannell demonstrated with his 2020 adaptation of “The Invisible Man” that he can effectively modernize classic Universal monsters while incorporating current horror elements.
In this iteration of “The Wolf Man”, Christopher Abbott steps into the role of the titular character. After a confrontation with a werewolf in the forest near his ancestral home, Abbott’s character starts to undergo a transformation. Given Whannell’s brilliance in “The Invisible Man”, it’s safe to assume that there is more to this story than what the basic premise suggests.
Dog Man
Title Date: January 31
If you’re a parent with elementary school-aged children, you’re probably familiar with “Dog Man”, the highly acclaimed graphic novel series by Dav Pilkey, best known for his work on “Captain Underpants”. These comics offer a hilarious take on science fiction and superhero stories, blending in a dash of gross-out humor that appeals to both kids (and their equally childish fathers, myself included). Incredibly, these books also manage to be surprisingly heartfelt.
Capturing the unique tone of “Dog Man” could be challenging, but based on the trailer for the upcoming film, it seems they’ve managed to get it just right – at least according to my two children (and their equally childish dad).
Captain America: Brave New World
2025 promises to be a more action-packed year for Marvel compared to their 2024 lineup, which featured only one film (“Deadpool & Wolverine”). In 2025, they plan to release three movies, including “Captain America: Brave New World,” the second-to-last installment in Phase Five of their cinematic universe. This movie is significant as it marks Anthony Mackie’s debut as the new Captain America. Additionally, it brings back several crucial characters from “The Incredible Hulk” after a 15-year hiatus, such as Betty Ross and The Leader. Lastly, it provides an opportunity to witness Harrison Ford portraying the enraged titan, the Red Hulk.
Mickey 17
Scheduled Release Date: March 7 (this year)
The release date for Bong Joon-ho’s anticipated sequel to Parasite, initially set for last year, has been postponed several times by Warner Bros. First, it was scheduled for January, then April, and now it’s slated for March of the current year. Let’s hope it stays that way! I am eagerly awaiting to see how Bong will utilize his Oscar-winning Best Picture as a springboard, collaborating with Robert Pattinson in a dystopian setting where a man agrees to be cloned each time he dies, only to encounter one of his duplicates.
Black Bag
Title Date: March 14th
Director Steven Soderbergh, who previously collaborated with screenwriter David Koepp on “Kimi” (2022) and “Presence” (January 2023), delves back into the realm of espionage for the film “Black Bag.” In this production, Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender portray a husband-wife spy duo. Their relationship becomes tense when Blanchett’s character is wrongly accused of treason. The plot seems reminiscent of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” but with a more polished and gritty feel. Count us in!
Sinners
Under the direction of Ryan Coogler, who has shined in some of this century’s top franchise films like “Creed” and “Black Panther”, we now find him venturing into new territory with the upcoming project, “Sinners”. Notably, this film reunites Coogler with Michael B. Jordan, who has been a staple in all four of Coogler’s previous works to date. While the specific plot details are still under wraps, it is known that “Sinners” is a period horror movie involving vampires and was acquired by Warner Bros. following a fierce bidding war between several studios.
The Accountant 2
Title Announcement: Unveiling the Return Date – April 25
After nearly a decade, the beloved character who juggles between being a Certified Public Accountant and a hitman, as well as your Wednesday night must-watch on TNT, is making a comeback! That’s right, the highly addictive action thriller from 2016, “The Accountant,” has finally received its sequel. Ben Affleck reprises his role, joined once again by director Gavin O’Connor and co-stars Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. The specifics of the plot might not matter too much, but rest assured, audiences will undoubtedly embrace it with enthusiasm. (Get ready for an avalanche of accounting jokes!)
Lilo & Stitch
Title Date: May 23
Apologies if you’ve grown tired of Disney’s continuous stream of live-action adaptations, especially considering some of the less impressive ones we’ve seen lately. However, Lilo & Stitch might buck this trend. Firstly, the source material – a mischievous alien landing on Earth and bonding with a solitary Hawaiian girl – appears more suitable for a live-action treatment compared to, say, a classic play featuring jungle animals. Secondly, the remake is helmed by Dean Fleischer Camp, known for his work on Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Here’s hoping he infuses freshness and originality into this adaptation. And let’s not forget about Stitch – such a lovable rascal!
The new Lilo & Stitch movie releases on May 23. You might be tired of Disney’s live-action remakes, but this one could be different due to its charming storyline and talented director who made Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Let’s hope it brings something fresh and unique! And remember, Stitch is a real character!
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly anticipate the arrival of “Mission: Impossible 8” on May 23. Yet again, it’s Tom Cruise who steps up to save both the world and potentially salvage the summer movie season. This time around, Ethan Hunt must thwart a global disaster while executing some jaw-dropping stunts that will leave you speechless.
The title implies this could be the finale of this incredible franchise, given Tom Cruise’s age (he’s 62, by the way). However, if this film becomes another box office juggernaut, I wouldn’t be surprised if “The Final Reckoning” isn’t truly the end, would you?
Karate Kid: Legends
Release Date: May 30th
There’s a chance this film could give me a swift kick from a crane. Poorly made Karate Kid movies can be truly terrible, but when they’re good, they’re exceptional. The idea of reviving the franchise with a sequel that features Ralph Macchio as the new Miyagi and Jackie Chan reprising his role from the 2010 Karate Kid remake is intriguing. Will Karate Kid: Legends reach the heights of the original film or the early seasons of Cobra Kai? If they strive for greatness out of love, it’s plausible. (The action in the trailer certainly looks enticing.)
28 Years Later
Title Date: June 20th
The original creators of the film “28 Days Later”, directors Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, are returning with a new installment titled “28 Years Later”. Although it’s arriving earlier than expected (the first movie was released 23 years ago), considering the current state of the world, it seems quite timely. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes are the new leads, but it’s rumored that original franchise protagonist Cillian Murphy will make an appearance. Additionally, expect plenty of fast-moving zombies to give you a good scare once again! I can hardly wait to be petrified all over once more.
F1
Title Date: June 27th
I must admit I’m not very knowledgeable about Formula One racing, but here’s something intriguing. The F1 movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski, is captivating. His thrilling style of action sequences in movies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ surpassed the original in intensity. So, a racing film by Kosinski, featuring Brad Pitt as an ex-driver who returns to guide a promising newcomer, seems like it could be quite a hit.
Superman
Title Date: July 11
If you were unsure about James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, creating an authentic Superman film, the impressive recent trailer might have won you over. David Corenswet takes on the role of Superman, facing off against a new Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and yearning for a new Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). While we’ve witnessed these characters on the big screen numerous times, what sets this movie apart is Krypto, a super dog we haven’t encountered before, who appears to be stealing every scene.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps
The month of July promises excitement for superhero movie enthusiasts, as both Marvel and DC are set to release their latest franchise installments. Two weeks after the debut of “Superman”, Marvel will unveil its first MCU adaptation of the Fantastic Four. This film boasts Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing. Notably, “First Steps” deviates slightly from typical Marvel productions, as it is also a period piece, set in an alternate 1960s reminiscent of the timeline that launched the Fantastic Four in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original comics.
Naked Gun
Title Release Date: August 1
Frankly, there’s no comedy franchise I hold dearer than “The Naked Gun,” the uproarious police parodies from David Zucker and the ZAZ team, starring Leslie Nielsen as the clumsy detective Frank Drebin. The notion of a fresh take without any of those individuals seemed questionable – until I learned that this new take was helmed by Akiva Schaffer of the Lonely Island (and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”) and stars Liam Neeson as the latest Drebin. Suddenly, it appears to be a brilliant idea.
Wicked: For Good
Date of Premiere: November 21
Indeed, the second part of the Wicked Broadway musical features weaker songs compared to the initial act. There’s no “Popular” or “Defying Gravity” in this segment. However, given the success of the first movie, who wouldn’t be eager to find out how the relationships between Elphaba, Glinda, and the Wizard of Oz unfold?
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Return to Pandora – Avatar 3
Exciting news for all fans! The third installment of the Avatar series is set to be released on December 19. This film promises to explore a new facet of Pandora and introduce us to a fresh Na’vi clan, known as the “Ash People.” (One can only imagine Bruce Campbell lending his voice to one of these characters.) Expect groundbreaking visuals, pulse-pounding action sequences, captivating characters, and, well, those distinctive fonts that never fail to amaze.
Marty Supreme
The Safdie brothers, who wowed us with their 2019 comic thriller “Uncut Gems,” haven’t announced any follow-up projects yet. However, in 2025, each brother will release a standalone film. Benny Safdie is making his directorial debut with “The Smashing Machine,” a biopic of MMA legend Mark Kerr featuring Dwayne Johnson. Meanwhile, Josh Safdie has “Marty Supreme” lined up, a movie about a ping pong champion portrayed by Timothée Chalamet. With two Sports-themed Safdie films slated for release in 2025, it promises to be an exciting year!
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery
Title Unveiled: The Third Benoit Blanc Mystery (Streaming on Netflix)
The exact launch date for this upcoming mystery is yet to be announced, but only an astute detective could pinpoint it. The star-studded lineup includes actors such as Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, and Glenn Close. At present, little is disclosed about the central mystery, although the title hints at a song from U2’s “Pop” album. Could there be a dance club murder this time around?
Frankenstein
Unveiling Date: To Be Announced (on Netflix)
And as for Netflix, this streaming colossus will also debut Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited rendition of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. Del Toro has been eager to bring this horror masterpiece to life for over a decade, and it was Netflix that made it come true. Oscar Isaac portrays Dr. Frankenstein in the film, while Jacob Elordi, known for his roles in “Euphoria” and “Saltburn”, assumes the role of the monster. It promises to be an eerie, entertaining spectacle.
