Denzel Washington’s Near-Disastrous Tongue Injury Affects Broadway Role
Denzel Washington is crediting his faith in God for a recent accident not being worse than it was.
The Training Day star, 70, said he almost bit his tongue off recently and it’s affecting his work.
The Academy Award-winning actor is gearing up to portray Othello on Broadway alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. During a recent interview, he disclosed that his tongue is currently swollen, which makes articulating certain lines challenging for him.
He informed the New York Times, “Where should I go to address this accusation of yours? My tongue is so swollen that it makes speaking difficult; it impacts me greatly.
Almost speaking with self-restraint allowed the actor from Gladiator II to ponder over his spiritual bond with God.
He clarified, “So that’s why I pray daily; it’s like saying, ‘Alright, God, I’m here and ready to follow what you seem to have planned for me.’
To be honest, I’m unsure about the reason, but it could be described as a coincidental or fortunate occurrence, among other things.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but wonder about the details surrounding the tongue injury that sidelined my beloved Remember the Titans star. Did he reveal the cause of this unexpected mishap? Or perhaps he sought medical attention to ensure a swift recovery? Either way, I’m eagerly awaiting any updates on his health and wellbeing!
When questioned about whether acting served as a beneficial career choice, Washington once more steered the discussion towards the topic of God.
In this moment, all my actions are guided by what I believe God would approve, rather than by others’ opinions. Frankly, I’m unaware of their thoughts. He expressed this sentiment.
If you descend into that tunnel, there’s no way you’ll emerge from it. Whenever someone asks, “What should people take away from this film?” or “What should they learn from this stage production?”, I usually respond, “That largely depends on what they bring to it themselves.
‘There’s some interesting themes [in Othello] of jealousy and envy and pain and death.
He mentioned that ‘Kenny [Leon], the talented director, is setting it in what he refers to as the imminent future.’
‘So all of those things – jealousy, envy – it takes on a whole new thing with the information age.’

In the New York Times article Denzel also spoke about a prophecy about him.
He mentioned, “Back when I was young, it was foretold that I’d journey across the globe and share my words with vast crowds.
Originally, I believed that expressing myself was largely accomplished through my professional endeavors. However, now I’m striving to articulate this more precisely, focusing on my spiritual beliefs instead.
He mentioned that the journey began for him in 1975, as he found himself having dropped out of college without a clear path forward in life.
‘Well, a woman was sitting in my mother’s beauty shop in March 1975,’ he began.
The cause for my presence there was that I’d dropped out of college – I was advised to spend a semester away, contemplating my career aspirations.
Every time I’d look up, there was a woman gazing at me, and she claimed she was receiving a vision or prediction about something, according to Washington.
She didn’t mention my acting career, yet I’ve traversed various parts of the globe and find myself speaking more frequently.

Last year, Denzel regained his religious belief and was baptized in December, a month before he turned 70 years old.
The actor born in Mount Vernon, New York was accompanied by his wife, Pauletta Washington (age 74), during his baptism ceremony.
Following his baptism, Washington remarked, “I must admit, it took some time, but I’ve arrived at last. If God can accomplish such wonders in my life, then truly, any dream within reach – even those as high as the heavens themselves – are achievable for you.
