EastEnders Star Cheryl Fergison Finds Joy in Unexpected Career Change and Community Projects

Actress Cheryl Fergison, known from EastEnders, is accustomed to performing for countless viewers seated comfortably at home.

Last Saturday, the actress found herself performing live at a newly opened Chinese restaurant instead of a grand stage, with only 30 attendees enjoying the festivities.

As a devoted admirer, I find myself reflecting on the journey of the 59-year-old actress who graced our screens as Heather Trott in that beloved soap opera for five splendid years. Since she parted ways with the show in 2012, her career has been akin to an exhilarating rollercoaster ride.

After earning a substantial income, Cheryl now acknowledges that she didn’t save any money at the time. In fact, due to financial difficulties, she had to rely on food banks for assistance.

Even though she is no longer a frequent face on television, the celebrity expressed joy to TopMob, stating that she “couldn’t be happier” prior to her performance for a small audience at the Dragon Lounge restaurant in Cleveleys, Lancashire, where she currently resides.

She stated that, at the age of 60 in August, she’s never been concerned with accumulating wealth or material possessions. Unlike influencers and social media personalities, she doesn’t prioritize actions based on monetary gain.

In my free time, I often engage in various community initiatives, such as community theater, which aims to nurture and encourage the creative abilities of others.

I’ve passed up on numerous opportunities that might have benefited my career, which in hindsight, I regret. If given another chance, I might choose differently.

In EastEnders, I didn’t aspire to play the lead role excessively. To me, it was simply a job, being an actor is my identity.

On June 26, 2007, Cheryl debuted for the first time as Heather, playing the role of Shirley Carter’s (portrayed by Linda Henry) sidekick.

She was recognized for her distinctive style that included wearing headbands, her fondness for cheese and George Michael, and later won the ‘Funniest Performance’ accolade at the 2008 Inside Soap Awards.

In March 2012, she concluded her last on-screen role when her character was murdered by Ben Mitchell, played by Joshua Pascoe.

The actress mentioned her soap opera departure, expressing sorrow yet acknowledging her overwhelming gratitude for a part she initially believed would span only four to five episodes.

She shared that she was informed about her departure when she was summoned to the executive’s office, who was visibly emotional as he communicated, “Individuals higher up have instructed me that you must leave. They wish to focus on nurturing other potential characters instead.

Initially, I was expected to stay for just four to five episodes, but unexpectedly, I ended up with a five-year stint instead. It feels incredibly fortunate to have gained such an extended opportunity from it.

In my personal perspective, when something concludes, I must face the reality head-on. Some individuals seem to be swept up in the excitement and commotion that swirls around them.

She clarified the common misperception that being on television equates to a substantial income: ‘In reality, many assume that a well-known TV personality is wealthy and financially secure. To some extent, this assumption holds true.’

However, I already used the funds. I didn’t give much thought to the expenses related to shopping, vacations, or similar items, and as a result, I didn’t save anything. Perhaps I should have saved instead.

If I were advising a young actor today who finds themselves in the same situation as I was during my time on ‘EastEnders’, I’d likely suggest they exercise caution since success in this industry can be fleeting.

Yet, Cheryl prioritizes experiences over material possessions or wealth, as she stated: ‘Nonetheless, I am convinced that experiences hold more value than physical items. Wealth can fluctuate, so why fret over it?’

Our family doesn’t exchange gifts among ourselves, not even during Christmas. Instead, we prefer pooling our resources to engage in shared activities together.

Life isn’t solely about acquiring possessions. Instead, it’s about creating cherished moments with the people who matter most to us – our loved ones.

Glancing ahead, Cheryl suggested she is working on a significant project in the near future, hinting cryptically, “I can’t reveal any details yet. I must stay tight-lipped, but I believe an announcement is imminent.

In a recent turn of events, the actress recently wrapped up her role as the Fairy Godmother in the Cinderella play at Peterborough, where she shared the spotlight with her son Alex Saddiqi, aged 25, who portrayed Buttons.

Currently, she’s been trialing a two-hour show titled “An Evening with Cheryl Fergison.” This event is rich with tales from her acting journey, interspersed with experiences shared by actors alike: the inevitable setbacks and rejections they encounter.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over landing a role in the hilarious sitcom, Mandy, which features the brilliant Diane Morgan. This offbeat comedy has been tickling our funny bones since 2019!

Cheryl isn’t afraid to admit she has used food banks in the past when money has been scarce.

She stated: “I believe it’s crucial for people to discuss the necessity of using them, as many individuals such as nurses often find themselves in this situation. People need to understand that we’re all only a few paychecks away from needing to do the same.

‘I suppose I should have invested some of the money I earned, maybe bought a house, but I didn’t.

I hail from a London council housing complex in times past. Our meals consisted primarily of sandwiches made with jam, sugar, or tomato ketchup; this was the means by which many managed to survive.

‘But I have been working for over 40 years and I will keep on working.’
