Jessica Gunning’s Life-Changing Win at Critics Choice Awards!
Jessica Gunning, who played a role in Baby Reindeer, enthusiastically expressed how her contentious character transformed her life during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice Awards held in Los Angeles last Friday.
In a striking black dress, the 38-year-old British actress, known for her role as Martha in the Netflix series, appeared radiant while accepting an award on stage, delivering a heartfelt speech.
Holding up her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, she acknowledged the show’s producers first, then expressed gratitude towards the creator and lead actor, Richard Gadd, who is 35 years old.
‘He’s not present tonight, but he made a significant impact on me by casting me as Martha. I’d like to express my gratitude to him for that, so here’s a big thank you to him on behalf of all.’
‘Though he’s missing tonight, he had a profound effect on me by selecting me to play Martha. So, I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to him, and I do so in the name of everyone here.’
Although Colin Farrell, aged 48, from “The Penguin” won the Best Actor award, our series still managed to secure the prize for Best Limited Series.
Jessica received the award on Richard’s behalf, expressing: ‘Richard isn’t able to attend. He has penned a message for me to share. I feel privileged and thrilled. I regret that I can’t join you. My BBC HBO series starts filming early next year.’

‘I’d like to shift the focus from my upcoming HBO series debuting early next year, to express my heartfelt gratitude towards the Critics Choice for selecting Baby Reindeer as their favorite. I have always admired critics, and this recognition is truly appreciated. When it comes to my BBC-HBO production airing soon, please remember that I am deeply thankful for your support.’
This version maintains the original message while using more conversational language and a slightly different structure for clarity and ease of reading.
I’d like to express my gratitude to Netflix, Lindsey, and Toby. A big thank you goes out to our exceptional production partners Matt, Ed, Petra, Veronica, and Josephine, as well as our incredible crew. The show would not have been possible without the immense contributions of Jessica, Nava [Mau], and the entire cast. They all played a crucial role in bringing this production to life.
The dark comedy-thriller has attracted criticism from people who believe they were misrepresented by the show.
Fiona Harvey stepped up, asserting she served as the model for Martha, contending the portrayal was misleading, and sued Netflix over it.
The ceremony began with a powerful commencement as Conclave was the first to receive an award that night, recognized for their exceptional ensemble performance.
In the movie, the lead actor, Ralph Fiennes, graciously received the accolade for the film that portrays the clandestine and thrilling process of choosing a new Pope.
Fiennes playfully remarked, as he spoke on behalf of his co-stars, that we all had a great time wearing our red skirts together.
The win has helped cement the late-breaking Oscars momentum for Fiennes and Conclave.

The long-awaited Critics Choice Awards, presented by Chelsea Handler, will finally unfold at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, following two postponements due to the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles.
Initially, the event was planned for Sunday, January 12. However, it was later rescheduled to Sunday, January 26.
Given the fire-stricken Pacific Palisades was just a stone’s throw away from our venue, the organizers and I made the decision to postpone the event until February.
Following Conclave’s win, the ceremony switched to television.
In the realm of comedic performances, I had the pleasure of witnessing double triumphs. As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that Hannah Einbinder and Michael Urie were crowned the best supporting actors and actresses, respectively, for their exceptional work in Hacks and Shrinking.
In their amusing acceptance speech, they both started speaking simultaneously, finishing each other’s sentences.
The victors from the supporting categories for limited series or TV movies trailed them (the winners).
Liev Schreiber was victorious in the male category for The Perfect Couple, whereas Tadanobu Asano and Moeka Hishi each earned two consecutive wins, one as supporting actor and one as supporting actress, in a drama series called Shogun.

After journeying from Japan to the U.S., Hoshi found herself emotional upon receiving her award, despite Asano being unable to attend the event.
She shared her thoughts for Los Angeles in the wake of its devastating fires.
She expressed deep emotion, saying, “I was astonished to discover how dramatically this stunning city has been transformed by the fire.” Showing compassion for those who have suffered losses, she added, “My heart aches for them, and I want them to know they’re not alone. From Japan, I continue to think of you and hold you close in my thoughts.
Following this, the tempo of the event shifted as the accolade for the Best Animated Feature was presented. This recognition was given to the highly praised movie, The Wild Robot.
In an impressive display, Colin Farrell dominated the competition by clinching the award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Film category, for his outstanding portrayal in “The Penguin”.
In order to make Farrell unidentifiable, the production team applied numerous thick layers of prosthetics, enabling him to portray the antagonist in the Batman series, who was given the nickname ‘Oz Cobb’.
In the hit movie “The Batman,” it was him who introduced this particular portrayal of the character, with Robert Pattinson playing the leading role as the titular hero.
Farrell charmed effortlessly, cracking jokes about once more acknowledging the show’s makeup team, a mystery to him.
In my heartfelt speech, I acknowledged and paid tribute to the tireless efforts of firefighters and first responders in Los Angeles, and as a fun twist, I gave a shout-out to none other than the remarkable Kathy Bates.
