‘Buffy’ resurrected: Sarah Michelle Gellar promises fans a faithful reboot is underway
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is eyeing a return to TV. Just ask its heroine.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, known for playing the main character in the supernatural series, has confirmed this week that a reboot of the cherished show is being planned over two decades after its ending. Outlets such as Variety and Deadline announced on Monday that Hulu is working on the project, with Chloé Zhao, an Academy Award-winning director from “Nomadland,” set to direct, and Sarah Michelle Gellar involved.
In the midst of all the talk about a potential restart, Gellar shared her thoughts on Thursday. On Instagram, she expressed, “I understand it’s been a while since I reached out,” followed by an account of numerous discussions that led up to this week’s announcements.

Bill Lawrence, currently experiencing the peak of his career at age 55, shares insights on the conclusion of ‘Shrinking’, future plans for ‘Ted Lasso’, and potential solutions for TV’s current actor dilemma.
As a devoted Buffyverse enthusiast, I’ve been waiting with bated breath for updates on the future of my beloved series that concluded back in 2003 after seven thrilling seasons. Though “Angel” graced our screens from 1999 to 2004 on the WB, subsequent attempts at reviving Buffy seemed to hit a dead end during the development stage. Moreover, some of the show’s talented actors have come forward with allegations against its creator, Joss Whedon, concerning misconduct – casting a shadow over the franchise’s future.
On Thursday, Gellar shared that three years ago, she received a call from “Buffy” executive producer and close friend Gail Berman regarding the possibility of a revival. Berman proposed a meeting with “Eternals” director Zhao to discuss her plans for “Buffy.” Gellar expressed being a fan of Zhao but felt uncertain about how the show could be brought back to life.
Earlier, it was clear that Geller wasn’t keen on a reboot, but the encounter with Berman and Zhao appeared to shift her perspective. In her own words, she described the 20-minute coffee meeting as transforming into an extended “journey.

2025 promises an abundance of television content, ranging from returning favorites such as “The White Lotus,” “Severance,” and “The Last of Us,” to fresh series like “Watson” and “Long Story Short.
We found ourselves laughing, shedding tears, but predominantly discussing just how significant this program is to each one of us,” Gellar elaborated.
Over time, the group carried on their discussions and collaborated with the songwriting duo, Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman, who were responsible for “Poker Face.” They eventually came up with a unique concept or idea together.
In a potential twist for fans, it seems the upcoming “Buffy” series might focus on a younger Slayer rather than me. Insiders shared this information with The Hollywood Reporter. On Thursday, I expressed my reservations about revisiting the “Buffy” universe, stating that I wouldn’t feel comfortable returning unless we could ensure a faithful representation. Since our initial discussions with Zhao and Berman, I’ve kept my followers updated on the progress, assuring them that we will only move forward with this project if we can get it right.
She added: “I will tell you that we are on the path there.”
