The PGL Cluj Napoca tournament is set to take place from February 14th to the 23rd, attracting some of the most prominent teams. Following close on the heels of IEM Katowice, this event offers teams an opportunity to assess not only their own abilities but also those of their competitors.
Why are teams pulling out of PGL Cluj Napoca?
Over the last few days, multiple teams have opted not to attend the PGL Cluj Napoca. This decision by FURIA enabled Imperial FE to join the competition instead. The reason for these teams’ withdrawals appears to be disagreements regarding how PGL distributes the tournament prize money.
In contrast to organizers like ESL and BLAST who split the tournament winnings between cash prizes and team revenue, PGL chooses to allocate all of the prize pool solely as cash prizes. This means some teams might leave the event empty-handed since they won’t receive any shares of the revenues.
The CEO of PGL clarified the reason behind this setup: “Rather than distributing funds among various categories, all payments are made directly to the organization. Each team will get their entire earnings, determined exclusively by performance, within just two weeks after the event,” he explained on Twitter.
Once the entire prize fund is given to the organizations, they have the freedom to determine their own distribution method for the award.
Although a few teams choose not to attend, there are still many recognized groups participating. Time alone can reveal if their revenue strategy proves successful in the long term.
