Angelina Jolie’s Shocking Smoking Revelation: From Two Packs a Day to Tomb Raider Fitness

Angelina Jolie is opening up about an old bad habit.

49-year-old actress confided that prior to her role as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, about 25 years back, she used to smoke approximately two packs of cigarettes daily.

During a question-and-answer session with movie critic Leonard Maltin at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival recently, Jolie reminisced about her experience portraying a video game heroine, explaining that this role compelled her to prioritize health and wellness.

She confessed that she was a heavy smoker, consuming two packs daily. However, to transform both her health and lifestyle, she was compelled to make changes and in the process, discovered capabilities she never knew she possessed.

She added that the 2001 movie would go on to ‘change everything’ for her.

As a lifestyle aficionado, let me share my personal experience: To embody Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, I underwent an intense training regimen that compelled me to step away from familiar comforts and habits.

Adopting a new health-conscious lifestyle caused her to give up smoking and instead, adopt healthier habits.

The Oscar-winning star reminisced about how for Tomb Raider, there were several months filled only with numerous training sessions throughout the day – morning, afternoon, and night. At some point, all he desired was wholesome meals, hydration, and rest.

‘I was in training and that’s what your body [wants]… You change,’ Angelina told Maltin.

After finishing the movie, the seasoned Hollywood actor commented on smoking cigarettes: ‘I haven’t done it since then… Or maybe just a rare occasion or two.’

Angelina was awarded the Maltin Modern Master award at the annual film fest on Wednesday night.

In her heartfelt speech, she became visibly moved as she reminisced about her deceased mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007.

She grew emotional while lauding her mother for consistently backing her acting ambitions, having relinquished her aspirations of being a creative herself.

Jolie, who is now a mother of six, shared that her late mother, Marcheline, would pen letters to each character she portrayed in films.

Angelina expressed her gratitude for being part of our community since not everyone has a creative outlet in their lives,” she stated during her speech earlier this week.

I often reflect on my mother; though she had to relinquish her aspirations for a creative career, she wholeheartedly supports mine instead.

The actor shared that for the past 16 years, they no longer receive letters from their mother, which she used to write to her fictional characters – “Dear Gia,” “Dear Lisa Rowe,” “Dear Lara Croft” and so on.

She mentioned that she pondered over what her mother might pen as a letter to her recently-portrayed character, the renowned opera singer Maria Callas, whom she brought to life in the 2024 biopic “Maria”.

Sometimes I picture what she might have said, and it seems likely she would have told Maria that she loved her, for Maria possessed many things, yet lacked a mother’s affection,” she continued.

I am truly nothing without her. Her passing occurred around this season long ago, making this kind of weather a constant reminder of her.

As an artist, I acknowledge the struggle that often accompanies my craft – a struggle that stems from a deep emotional connection to my work. This shared experience is not unique to me; I am part of a vast community of artists who grapple with this same challenge.
