Steve Coogan Reveals Feeling ‘Saddled’ With Alan Partridge Despite Iconic Success
Through his comedic performance as Alan Partridge, a hapless TV and radio host, he gained widespread recognition, accumulating numerous awards for his continuously amusing act that remained popular over time.
In my experience, portraying the character I initially breathed life into for the 1991 radio program On The Hour – a satirical news show featuring the fictitious Partridge – eventually began to feel more like a burden than a feather in my cap.
In the seventh season of their Dish from Waitrose Podcast, Coogan mentioned that he spoke with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett. At 59 years old, he expressed that there was a period when he felt burdened by it. However, when he portrays Partridge, he does so out of personal choice rather than obligation because he feels compelled to do so.
‘I’m doing some stuff at the moment, and it does make me laugh, so… I make notes in my phone.
‘I find myself thinking about a humorous thought while on the train, causing me to chuckle alone. Later, I’ll jot down this idea that made me think of Alan Partridge and save it on my phone privately.’
Alternatively, I could peer into a storefront, pondering aloud, “I wonder what Alan’s take on this would be.” Over the past three decades, I’ve found myself continuing this behavior, making it something of a habit or even a personal trait.
In 2017 at the TV BAFTAs, Coogan was honored with the award for Best Male Comedy Performance for his iconic character, Alan Partridge in “Scissored Isle,” which marked one of six awards he has received throughout his career.
Additional praise might ensue upon the launch of another show spearheaded by Partridge, though the exact release date remains unknown. Notably, Coogan has finished working on a fresh endeavor where the bumbling host takes a step forward to address mental health issues.
Coogan mentioned that the individual could potentially return to television by discussing significant topics, as he was saying. Right now, we’re working on finalizing it.
Although he is closely tied to the character, Coogan admits that he sometimes finds it hard to understand Partridge’s famous insensitivity and his total disregard for political correctness.
He implied that attempting to explain it would be quite daring, as there are aspects so unconventional, they defy description. Instead, he suggested simply listening to it.
However, there are certain things he states that are so absurd, they provoke laughter in me, as I can hardly imagine anyone saying such things, let alone myself.
However, since you, the viewers are aware of who he is and understand that despite his lack of knowledge, he’s making an effort. He isn’t malicious, but rather misguided. Yet, it’s amusing when a fool expresses thoughts that some secretly concur with. Thus, it provides a small dose of catharsis, which is quite enjoyable.
Additionally, you could poke fun at someone in a lighthearted manner, for instance, by having Alan claim them as his closest buddy.
Coogan also starred in Jimmy Savile drama The Reckoning, which aired in October 2023.
The account, titled “The Reckoning,” delves into Savile’s journey to notoriety and the horrific acts of abuse he committed during his peak popularity. Furthermore, it sheds light on how his wrongdoings came to light after his demise.
The four-part BBC series was praised for its handling of paedophile Jimmy’s heinous acts.
However, prior to its debut, the series faced criticism from the families of victims who felt uncomfortable about their personal stories being transformed into entertainment before its release.
By October 2023, it was planned for Coogan to personally sign copies of his “Alan Partridge” autobiography, all while embodying the bumbling broadcaster’s persona.
Instead, it’s said that his team expressed concern that his sudden appearance as ‘Alan’ might seem disconcerting, given that he had recently portrayed ‘Savile’ in the series.
According to a source, Steve’s team understood that the BBC drama was very confidential and might conflict with him preparing for his role as Alan in his book. They didn’t want to create any unwanted attention or controversy.
The event was rescheduled for a later date in the month, to avoid being too near the time that The Reckoning was broadcast.
The representative for the actor stated to TopMob previously: ‘Because of a rigorous rehearsal plan for his upcoming movie, the book signings have been postponed until later this month, aligning with Steve’s schedule.’
