Jesse Eisenberg Distances Himself from Mark Zuckerberg: ‘I Don’t Want to Be Associated’
Jesse Eisenberg has explained his lack of desire to be connected with Facebook and Meta co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, revealing the reasons behind it.
In a celebrated 2010 film titled “The Social Network,” this 41-year-old Hollywood actor portrayed the role of the renowned tech entrepreneur. This performance marked his initial Oscar nomination.
Nonetheless, the actor has decided to break ties with Zuckerberg’s storyline moving ahead due to his latest actions.
In a conversation with BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday, the director openly criticized the tycoon as he was publicizing his Academy Award-nominated film titled “A Real Pain”.
He clarified in a video clip (shared by the BBC) that he hasn’t kept tabs on this person’s journey, mainly due to his preference for not being perceived as linked to someone of that nature.
He went on to say: ‘I’m not trying to create the illusion that I’m an exceptional golfer or anything, but rather, I’m someone who engages in actions that raise questions, disregarding fact-verification and safety considerations.’
‘Making people who are already threatened in this world more threatened.’
He stated that he shares the same level of concern as an average reader of a newspaper when asked about the latest editorial choices made by Meta. He emphasized that he doesn’t view it from the perspective of, “Well, I acted alongside him in the film.
He went on saying, “I’m merely a regular person, and when you consider such wealth, it’s mind-boggling. These individuals possess fortunes far greater than any single human being has ever accumulated in history.
What is their intention regarding that? It appears they are using it as a means to gain approval from individuals who propagate harmful views.
Last month, Meta revealed its decision to discontinue the standalone fact-checking initiatives for both Facebook and Instagram.
Rather than combating misinformation directly, the company will adopt a strategy similar to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter), encouraging users to create their own annotations to clear up any potential misunderstandings.
In the video revealing the updates, Zuckerberg stated that it was now appropriate to return to our core values centered on freedom of speech.
Mark Zuckerberg was among the attendees at Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony as U.S. President on January 20th, and just prior to this, his company reached a $25 million settlement for Trump’s 2021 lawsuit over his previous suspension from their platforms.
His suspension came into effect after the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots in Washington, D.C.
The Social Network was written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher.
The movie narrates how Facebook was founded, depicting a series of intense legal disputes involving Mark Zuckerberg (portrayed by Eisenberg), Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), and the Winklevoss twins (played by Armie Hammer).
Justin Timberlake, Rashida Jones, Rooney Mara, and Dakota Johnson also starred in the flick.
The movie earned eight nominations for the Oscars, among them being Best Picture, and it won in three categories: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score.
After making over $220 million at the box office, there was speculation in the following years as to whether a sequel would be produced, focusing on further expansion of Mark Zuckerberg’s company.
Fincher and Sorkin have mentioned in various conversations throughout the years about the possibility of a sequel, but in a recent interview from 2023, Fincher referred to it as an “unwanted can of problems” or simply “a complicated situation.
In the meantime, “A Real Pain” serves as Eisenberg’s second endeavor in both screenwriting and direction, coming after his initial attempt with the 2022 film “When You Finish Saving The World.
Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin play two vastly different cousins who embark on a strange journey.
In addition to its stellar cast, A Real Pain features Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, and Kurt Egyiawan. J. Eisenberg produces this production in collaboration with Emma Stone and her husband Dave McCarry.
