Despite being banned from entering the UK just hours before his scheduled performance, the artist who now goes by a different name – previously known as Kanye West – still managed to find something to be happy about on Tuesday evening.
The rapper formerly known as Kanye West was a headlining act at the Wireless festival, which has now been cancelled. This cancellation follows widespread criticism of the festival for inviting West, given his history of making antisemitic statements, and there are now calls to permanently end the event.
Despite a formal apology from the event organisers on Tuesday, the person at the centre of the issue seemed unconcerned while performing at a comedy club in Los Angeles.
Forty-eight-year-old West was performing at The Lab At Hollywood Improv when he was playfully called the ‘modern day Michael Jackson’ by fellow performers, actor Deon Cole and comedian Ocean Glapion, in recognition of his impact on today’s music. The three were doing an unscripted, improvised comedy set.
After the show, Glapion shared their excitement on Instagram, calling the night “one of the most amazing and memorable ever!” They were thrilled to have performed on stage with two legendary performers.
The post received a predictably varied reaction, including one comment stating: ‘We shouldn’t accept or support someone who previously sold shirts with swastikas and identified as a Nazi…’
Someone also pointed out that while they hope Kanye West continues to prioritize his mental health and find peace, his apology came right before he announced a new album and concert plans.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the rapper Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) should not have been invited to perform at the Wireless Festival in London, given his use of Nazi imagery and accusations of antisemitism.
The controversial lyrics and merchandise promoted by the rapper – including a song referencing ‘Heil Hitler’ and a swastika T-shirt sold on his website – led to demands that he be barred from entering the UK.
West applied for permission to travel to the UK on Monday using an online system, but the Home Office denied his request, stating his presence would not benefit the public, according to the Press Association.
West’s ETA was initially granted online before ministers intervened, it is understood.
The Prime Minister said: ‘Kanye West should never have been invited to headline Wireless.
Our government strongly supports the Jewish community and is committed to fighting and overcoming antisemitism.
‘We will always take the action necessary to protect the public and uphold our values.’
Festival Republic announced that Ye has been refused entry into the UK because his travel authorization has been revoked by the Home Office.
‘As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket-holders.
Like with all Wireless Festival headliners, we spoke with various groups before booking Ye, and no one raised any issues at that point.
As a firm believer in inclusivity, I’m deeply disturbed by antisemitism in any form. I truly recognize how hurtful and damaging these issues are for individuals and communities, and it’s something I find completely unacceptable.
Ye stated today that he understands words aren’t enough on their own, but he still wants to have a dialogue with the Jewish community in the UK.
The rapper had offered to meet the British Jewish community before his show.
Before the government made its announcement, he released a statement saying he wanted to directly respond to the discussion about Wireless.
I want to come to London and share a performance that inspires positive change, spreading messages of togetherness, peace, and love through my music.
I’d really appreciate the chance to meet with people in the UK’s Jewish community face-to-face, and to hear their perspectives.
I realize just saying I’ll change isn’t enough; I need to demonstrate it with my behavior. I’m here to work on things if you’re willing to give me a chance.
Presale tickets for Wireless Festival went on sale at noon on Tuesday and reportedly sold out quickly. General sale tickets were scheduled to become available at noon on Wednesday.
The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity dedicated to protecting British Jews from antisemitism, welcomed the government’s decision, calling it a positive result after a difficult period for the Jewish community.
The organization stated that antisemitism is unacceptable and that cultural leaders should actively work to prevent it.
The Jewish community is open to hearing from individuals who sincerely apologize for past antisemitic actions, but that apology needs to happen privately before any attempt at public image repair.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) said the Government had made “the right decision”.
The government affirmed its commitment to fighting antisemitism by not only stating it has no place in the UK, but also by taking concrete steps to address it.
Given that this individual recently profited from selling offensive merchandise featuring swastikas and released a song praising Hitler, they would clearly be harmful to British society.
Phil Rosenberg, who leads the Board of Deputies of British Jews, stated that they would consider meeting with Kanye West if he withdrew from the Wireless Festival.
Rosenberg pointed out that it’s been less than a year since Kanye West released a song referencing ‘Heil Hitler,’ which followed three years of deeply offensive antisemitic statements.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m deeply troubled by recent statements made by a public figure. He shockingly minimized the horrific history of slavery, suggesting the 400-year struggle of the Black community was somehow a matter of personal choice. This is not only incredibly insensitive but demonstrates a profound lack of understanding and empathy. It’s a harmful perspective that disregards the systemic oppression and lasting trauma experienced by generations. Frankly, it’s unacceptable.
Despite expressing regret today, his new album still features a song originally released last year that carries the deeply offensive title ‘Gas Chamber’.
He added that the Jewish community needs to see real regret and lasting change before they’ll accept an apology being offered publicly, like at the Wireless Festival.
We’re open to meeting with Kanye West to support his recovery, but only if he cancels his performance at this year’s Wireless Festival.
