Leo Woodall Opens Up About the Terrifying Reality of Sudden Fame and Objectification
Leo Woodall, who plays Bridget Jones, admitted that his sudden rise to stardom following his performance in the latest movie was a truly terrifying experience for him.
In the upcoming film, the 28-year-old actor will portray the character of Bridget Jones’ love interest, Roxster.
In a chat with Radio Times prior to the launch of Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, I shared my thoughts on the unexpected whirlwind of my sudden stardom.
He found it quite overwhelming, considering the swift transition he experienced – moving from small sets to large ones, followed by photo shoots, appearances, and interviews.
‘The filming, I’m getting more comfortable with and it’s becoming my safe haven.’
After he shared that objectifying himself in his roles made him feel “vulnerable and exposed.”
This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler, more conversational language.
Regarding how my career took off, he expressed that while he dislikes the term “catapulted,” it certainly propelled my career trajectory.
In many of his projects, Leo has often portrayed romantic leads, prompting people to wonder if he ever feels reduced to an object or sexualized, which is colloquially known as “objectification.
He stated, “Indeed, it’s a combination of good and challenging aspects.” While some parts are expected and integral to the job, others can leave you feeling exposed and vulnerable, which is less enjoyable.
When embodying such a character, it’s almost inevitable to think, “Could I really be this person?” There’s often a sense of responsibility to convince others of the authenticity.
One of the stars featured in this year’s Red Nose Day, alongside Claudia Winkleman and Olivia Atwood, expressed his belief that producing movies with a central romance between a more mature male character and a younger woman is significant.
‘It’s a dynamic that has always existed in the real world’ he said.
As a devoted enthusiast, I find myself intrigued by the recent depiction on the silver screen. This aspect holds significance, for it is cinema’s unique strength to mirror and illuminate diverse segments of society.
Initially, I didn’t join with the intention of exploring it extensively. Instead, what captivated me was the stunning script, and I felt compelled to contribute. I’ve had a deep affinity for the movies since time immemorial.
‘There’s only so many chances you’ll get to be a part of something as special as Bridget Jones.’
Leo has disclosed that the part he played in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy will undergo a significant transformation.
In the fourth film of the romantic comedy series, the character Leo, a London resident, takes on the role of Roxster, a worker in Hampstead Heath park. He crosses paths with a bumbling and smitten television employee, portrayed by Renee Zellweger, after he saves her from a tree.
The movie focuses on exploring the complexities of age gap relationships, particularly the story of Bridget, a 51-year-old woman, as she navigates dating a 29-year-old named Roxster. A love triangle ensues when Mr. Wallaker, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, a teacher at Bridget’s son’s school, also becomes involved in the storyline.
In a different take from what was portrayed on screen, Leo crafted his character in an unusual manner, eventually unveiling that the original intention was for this character to hail from Scotland.
On The Graham Norton Show that aired last Friday, Renee (age 55) was joined by Leo. He shared an interesting story: ‘Initially, I was supposed to portray a Scot. I had prepared myself to deliver the audition in a Scottish accent. However, after I did it, they decided against it!’
As a lifestyle connoisseur, let me share my take on Leo’s insights: In our shared journey on the sets of One Day and The White Lotus, I, much like the enigmatic Hugh Grant, didn’t forge a deep bond during filming. However, our paths have crossed gracefully at red carpets and high-profile events post-production, where we’ve had delightful encounters.
He mentioned that he never had the opportunity to collaborate with Hugh, and was too timid to introduce himself. People frequently inquire about his personality, to which he often responds, “I can’t tell you, as we haven’t crossed paths yet.
