Atari Announces Breakout Beyond, Reviving the ’70s Classic
Later this year, Atari plans to unveil “Breakout Beyond,” a modern take on their iconic arcade game.
The original Breakout debuted in arcades in 1976, and then came to the Atari 2600 in 1978.
Breakout Beyond flips everything upside-down, sporting a revamped appearance, vibrant electric hues, and electrifying lines that give it a hint of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. It seems Atari aims to achieve the ‘retro evolved’ feel.
Breakout Beyond will also feature, according to the publisher:
- Unlockable endless mode with an online global leaderboard
- 72 challenging levels that will put players’ brick-breaking skills to the test
- Two-player co-op to manage (or ramp up) the chaos with a friend
- Procedural audio and visual effects that increase in intensity with each combo
There is an announcement trails for the upcoming game. The descriptions reads:
Experience Breakout like never before in ‘Breakout Beyond’! Developed by Choice Provisions (BIT.TRIP), this vibrant, neon-infused version of the classic game offers endless combo opportunities and powerful upgrades to help you reach your destination.
The game by Atari doesn’t have a specified launch date yet, but they’ve hinted it will arrive towards the end of this year. It will be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
