Sumo Digital has revealed that they’ll cease developing original intellectual properties (IP), choosing instead to collaborate with other companies on various projects.
Sumo Digital is known for excelling at developing games outside of their own franchises, seamlessly adapting to other game series. Games like Crackdown 3 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure were created by Sumo Digital, although you wouldn’t realize it while playing them.
Yet, the company’s initial games were exceptional, boasting hits like Snake Pass and the often overlooked gem, Spyder.
In a statement shared to employees (via VGC), Sumo said:
Following a thorough evaluation, we’ve chosen to specialize Sumo Digital solely on partner-focused development projects – an area that showcases our expertise and contributes significantly to our achievements.
By utilizing our top-tier skills, we aim to solidify ourselves as a superior game development collaborator. We can help create outstanding games for our clients, whether we’re working on brand new or existing titles, joining forces for co-development, offering specialized engineering solutions, or providing porting services. Our teams’ exceptional abilities fill us with confidence as we embark on this exciting new phase.
Sadly, it also means that layoffs may be on the cards:
It’s inevitable that this transformation will influence our workspaces and team members. Our top priority is to lessen this effect as much as we can, by considering every available solution to keep our skilled professionals, and offering assistance, openness, empathy, and concern for those who are affected.
