Nick Grimshaw Reveals He Prayed to Be Cured of Being Gay as a Teen
Nick Grimshaw has spoken candidly about the personal battles he experienced regarding his sexual orientation during his formative years.
Back in 2012, a former host on BBC Radio 1, who is currently 40 years old, openly declared that he is gay. In March of this year, he announced his engagement to his partner, Meshach Henry.
As a product of his upbringing within the Catholic faith, Nick felt a profound sense of guilt regarding his sexual orientation.
On Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast this Wednesday, Nick revealed that he was raised attending Catholic schools, which led him to feel guilty about his homosexuality.
‘I’d pray to be cured or [think] why me? I’d be like, I don’t want to be gay.
Instead of trying to suppress or change my sexual orientation, I wished it could disappear but remained hopeful that by actively pursuing heterosexuality, it might shift somewhat. However, this strategy proved unsuccessful in altering my feelings.
Or,
I had once hoped that by forcing myself to be attracted to the opposite sex, I could change my sexual orientation. But, alas, it did not work out as planned.
Both sentences convey the same meaning but use slightly different wordings and structures for a more natural and easy-to-read style.
He went on to say: “When I considered joining football, I’d try to imitate my brother and father by sitting, watching, and enjoying the game just as they did.
‘I remember going to get a football magazine and I thought, well, I’ll just learn about this.
I plan on understanding heterosexuality through Shoot magazine. However, it felt awkward and forced for me, almost like completing a school assignment.
As I reminisced, I couldn’t help but be transported back to a time when, flipping through the pages of a glossy magazine, my eyes landed on an image of none other than David Beckham post-match.
In a nostalgic recollection as a lifestyle connoisseur, allow me to share an experience from my youth: There was a photograph that captivated me completely – it featured a man who had recently won something and played for Manchester United. As a youngster, I found myself utterly mesmerized by this image, drawn in like a magnet. At the time, I wasn’t entirely aware of the feelings stirring within me; I merely knew that I was awestruck, much like being enchanted by a 3D Magic Eye picture.
I vividly recall sharing my fascination with this photograph with my mother and asking her if I could hang it on my bedroom wall. My mother, always pragmatic, suggested I consult my father first, as the image might have had some adult content that warranted his judgment. Looking back, the photograph was in black and white, which only added to its enigmatic allure, and it’s safe to say that it was likely quite a seductive portrait.
I recall demonstrating the item to my father, who was tending to our garden at the time. I inquired if I could hang it on my wall, and he responded that I was allowed to do so but not with Blu Tack. Essentially, his concern was about using Blu Tack.
He didn’t ask why you wanted to hang up a semi-naked image of David Beckham; instead, he suggested that you should choose your decoration carefully.
After Nick officially announced his engagement to his partner, Meshach ‘Mesh’ Henry, following four years together.
The popular BBC Radio 1 DJ confirmed the news in an Instagram post shared with his followers.
Showing his engagement ring across various passport photo sequences, he shared: “In today’s LGBTQ+ news… I was proposed to, and of course, I said yes!
Nick’s post featured not only a picture of his brand-new, shiny gold engagement ring, but also an immediate photograph captured just seconds after Mesh made the proposal.
The pair appeared to be enjoying a sunny getaway, as the DJ posed surrounded by a beach sunset.
In the year 2018, Nick started going out with dancer Mesh. He had earlier shared that their first encounter was following his shift to the Radio 1 Drivetime program.
2019 reports indicated that Nick and Meshach decided to share living quarters, allowing them more frequent interaction during the workweek.
A source told The Sun: ‘Nick is the happiest he has ever been and Mesh is a massive part of that.
Given the frequent overnight stays and their strong bond, it was only logical for them to decide to share a living space and live together.
Nick invited him to move in, and things have been smooth sailing since then. Since their work schedules are not traditional 9-to-5 jobs, they have ample time during the week to spend together.
Nick and Meshach were first spotted at the Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire in October 2018.
In those days, I was privy to some insider info that spilled to me about Nick: ‘He’s been grappling with dating, given his work demands have made it quite a challenge recently.’
However, he only recently crossed paths with Mesh a couple of months back. Though it’s still in the early stages, they are thoroughly appreciating their moments spent together. They’re proceeding cautiously without any rush or expectations.
‘Nick really likes him, and his friends are thrilled he has found someone who makes him happy.’
