Shrinking season 3 finale spoilers follow.
Despite originally intending for only three seasons, Apple TV+ has confirmed that Shrinking will return for a fourth season. Co-creator Bill Lawrence recently explained the decision to continue the show, which just finished airing its third season with the finale now available to stream.
Viewers might think this is the last episode, as the story sees Jimmy (Jason Segel) starting to move on from his wife’s death by getting involved with Sofi (Cobie Smulders). Meanwhile, his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell American) goes off to college in Connecticut, and Paul (Harrison Ford) and his wife also decide to move to the state.

Lawrence recently shared that he originally proposed the show would run for three seasons to Apple TV+. He’s now confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the story has come to a natural conclusion.
He said this marks the end of the three-season arc. He’s hoping that when the show returns – whether with a jump forward in time or not – viewers will feel like they’re watching a brand new story.
What to Read Next
He explained that the show explores whether Jimmy, played by Jason Segel, can overcome the grief of losing his wife and eventually find happiness again.
Now that the original cast is reunited, including Ford, the show’s creator has hinted at upcoming storylines. He specifically mentioned that Alice’s choice of Wesleyan University is intentional and that she’s been seen visiting Paul’s home for dinner.

You know, as time goes on, everything just… changes. People move, lives evolve, and the world around you definitely isn’t the same as it used to be. It’s crazy how much things can shift!
Lawrence explained that they generally only move the story forward a couple of months between seasons. This is because their show relies on ongoing storylines that need to be continuously developed.
You know, we kept joking that it felt like ‘Groundhog Day’ with the timeline. It’s funny because if you really look at the show, everything usually happens over about three weeks to a month. So, this jump to season four is a big deal – we’re talking way more than just a year or two passing. It’s going to be a significant shift in the story!
Shrinking seasons 1-3 are streaming now on Apple TV.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! This special 100-page, full-colour magazine celebrates the life and work of Sir David Attenborough. You can find it at newsstands or order it online.
