The Goonies Cast Reunite at Ke Huy Quan’s Ceremony Amid Sequel Speculations
Enthusiasts of the 1985 cult favorite film The Goonies continue to harbor dreams of a sequel fueled by whispers, but they were given an enjoyable shock on Monday as some of the cherished cast members reunited in a mini gathering.
Approximately 45 years following the movie’s premiere, it was evident that the Goonies team’s friendship was as indestructible as one could be, as they reunited at the TLC Chinese Theater to honor Ke Huy Quan, who breathed life into the beloved character Data in Richard Donner’s timeless adventure.
Josh Brolin (Brand), Corey Feldman (Mouth), Jeff Cohen (Chunk), Kerri Green (Andy), along with screenwriter Chris Columbus, gleefully walked the red carpet, relishing in the opportunity to exchange humorous banter and capture nostalgic moments with Quan.
It was clear how close everyone was, as each cast member gave Quan heartfelt embraces that were like warmth, while Cohen, now acting as his legal representative in the entertainment industry, offered a particularly proud and strong hug.
Despite Sean Astin (Mikey) not attending in person, he’s already reconnected with Quan on screen in his newest movie “Love Hurts”, demonstrating that the Goonies camaraderie remains powerful within the film industry.
At this special event, Quan was recognized for his remarkable career that started when he was only 12 in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and reached its peak with his Academy Award victory for Best Supporting Actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
With the reunion stirring up even more memories of The Goonies, fans found themselves questioning if another exciting escapade was possible for the group.
Every couple of months, rumors about a follow-up emerge, but they are swiftly dismissed by the original actors – with their most recent denial happening in September.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m excited to share some intriguing news about the potential comeback of an iconic film. A recent buzz suggested that The Goonies 2 might be filmed next summer, with several original cast members set to reprise their roles. However, it seems that this rumor has been quashed by none other than Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton themselves. While I remain hopeful about a sequel, for now, it appears we’ll have to keep the Goonies spirit alive with our memories.
‘People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one “attached,”‘ Plimpton wrote on Instagram.
‘[Steven] Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.’ she added.
Feldman said at the time that he had ‘no information’ whatsoever that a sequel was in development.
In 2014, there was significant talk about a potential Goonies sequel, with Variety announcing that director Donner aimed to bring back the original cast for The Goonies 2.
Back then, Astin was remarkably hopeful, asserting, “A Goonies 2 is definitely in the works,” and emphasizing, “I’m absolutely positive a sequel is coming. I’d put my kids’ allowance on it.
Regrettably, Donner died in 2021 at the age of 91, effectively ending the possibility of our long-awaited reunion.
As for Cohen, in 2015, he revealed how losing his puppy fat was the end of his acting career.
Originally a popular child actor, now thriving as an attorney in entertainment, had to permanently leave the Hollywood industry because he could longer accept roles that portrayed him as an overweight character.
In this small town, it was common to see nearly four overweight children around. As a result, whenever an opportunity for a ‘fat kid’ role came up in auditions, the same individuals were typically present. This was stated by the 40-year-old lawyer.
In my world, it was all about who could last the longest, the chunkiest. Yet, as I entered my teenage years, it spelled doom for my acting career. Transformation wasn’t just a phase anymore, I was morphing from Chunk to Hunk, and the roles were suddenly out of my reach.
Jeff went on to say, “It was dreadful. My initial passion was for acting, but puberty had a different plan. I was essentially pushed into early retirement. I didn’t abandon acting; acting let me go.
In 1993, Astin made his mark by starring in the movie Rudy, and from 2001 to 2003, he portrayed the beloved character Samwise Gamgee, the great hobbit, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In addition to featuring in the second series of Stranger Things, this actor was also spotted in a fleeting role during the initial season’s third installment.

At the 2013 reunion, Corey reminisced about The Goonies: “It felt as if we were working on the most exciting film location.
‘Harrison Ford came and walked the caves with us. We felt like we were in Indiana Jones.’

The cherished movie “The Goonies” revolves around a band of young explorers who accidentally discover an ancient treasure map and set out on a thrilling adventure to locate the wealth of the infamous pirate One-Eyed Willie—all while being pursued by a ruthless gang of thieves determined to claim the treasure for their own.
Produced by Spielberg, the film became an instant classic and remains a staple of 80s cinema.
It appears that, at this moment, the adventure of searching for the treasure, like The Goonies, may continue to exist only in our memories.
