Channel Nine Star Peter Overton’s Shock Health Battle: ‘Scared’

Peter Overton has opened up about his shock health scare which left him unable to talk for a week.

58-year-old veteran from 9News had to take a break from broadcasting to have an operation on his voice box due to the discovery of a growth (polyp).

During his six-week vacation, Overton observed that his voice had developed a hoarseness and roughness, leading him to consult a general practitioner.

Afterward, he was sent to an ENT specialist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), who promptly arranged for a surgical procedure to excise the polyp.

According to Overton, they insert a camera through your nostril, all the way to your vocal cords, and then on a large screen, you can observe your vocal cords.

‘And I saw this. It was like a big blister, a lump just hanging off the cord.’

As a lifestyle advisor, I can empathize with the fear and anxiety that comes from undergoing a surgical procedure. In my own experience, such events are particularly daunting when they temporarily rob you of one of life’s most fundamental means of communication – speech. For a whole week, I found myself unable to speak after surgery, which only amplified the sense of vulnerability and unease.

‘I must admit, it scared the living daylights out of me,’ he said.

Three days after the procedure, they performed surgery and removed it using a laser. I stayed in the hospital for a single day following that, and then returned home. After this, I was required to remain silent for more than a week.

He added that being unable to talk required quite the adjustment.

‘It was interesting being mute,’ he said.

If I were to fetch the milk, I’d compose an email to remind myself that I’d need to share it with someone.

The broadcasting veteran added he had been seeing a speech pathologist as part of his recovery.

News of Overton’s shock health scare was broken by his wife Jessica Rowe, earlier this month.

54-year-old Rowe posted a heartfelt picture on Instagram featuring Peter embracing their beloved pet dog, accompanied by a somewhat concerning message in the caption.

She mentioned that Peter isn’t active on Instagram, and he asked me to spread some recent updates. Currently, he is taking some time off work.

Following the detection of a polyp on his vocal cord by an ENT specialist, it becomes clear why he had such a hoarse voice during the holiday season.

She mentioned that Peter was currently recovering from surgery, which required him to limit his talking as part of the healing process, implying he couldn’t resume work soon.

‘They performed surgery on him, and currently, he’s not allowed to speak as part of his healing process (it’s quite a big hurdle for him!). Fingers crossed, we’ll see him on Nine News again in no time.’

It comes after Overton underwent hip replacement surgery back in April.

At the specified moment, Rowe shared on Instagram that Overton was receiving plenty of affectionate care.

In the caption, Rowe mentioned that many people have missed seeing Petee on their TVs over the past few weeks and have inquired about his whereabouts.

‘Well he’s at home recovering from hip replacement surgery and getting lots of TLC.

‘Petee will be back on Nine News Sydney soon.’

Fans filled Jess’ replies with comments and well wishes.
