Trailer for new Stephen King horror banned from broadcast over “excessive violence”
The promotional clip for the forthcoming Stephen King-inspired horror film, titled “The Monkey“, has been prohibited from airing due to excessive violent content.
The Monkey” – Featuring Theo James and inspired by a short tale penned by Stephen King, this narrative follows the journey of two identical twins as they join forces to eliminate an ominous toy monkey that had been tainted by a dark past.
Under the guidance of director Osgood Perkins, who goes by the pseudonym Longlegs, this film has drawn comparisons to the Final Destination series due to its creatively grim demises, several of which are prominently displayed in the teaser trailer.
As reported by its distributor, Neon, it seems that several television stations have chosen not to air the trailer due to its graphic nature.
As a gaming enthusiast, I took to Instagram today to share some disappointing news: Neon’s latest promotional video for their upcoming game didn’t quite make it to the screens as planned. It seems that four broadcasters declined to air the trailer, leaving us in the dark about why they chose not to showcase it.
As an ardent supporter, I took the plunge and sent our TV commercial for ‘THE MONKEY’ to the big four networks. Unfortunately, it seems the response wasn’t quite what we hoped for.
A broadcasting staff member clarified that the content shown below wouldn’t be allowed in programming due to the intense violence displayed in the horror movie trailer.
In the back-and-forth conversation, the distributor inquired from the broadcaster to provide specific details about the problems that needed addressing to tailor the trailer for television broadcast. The broadcaster’s response implied that nearly the entire trailer was not suitable for TV.
During their email correspondence, the distributor requested that the broadcaster detail the exact issues they needed to address in order to modify the trailer for appropriate TV airing. The broadcaster’s message hinted that the vast majority of the trailer was unsuitable for television broadcast.
In normal circumstances, we might proceed as usual, but in this instance, every single scene is a hotspot of action. It’s extremely violent, filled with splashes of blood, and contains disturbing, graphic content, including depictions of severed heads.
1. The email from the other broadcaster stated that the movie/creative content is too violent to be shown on their network.
2. They also mentioned that even with restrictions, the trailer was not appropriate for their viewers.
In a different email conversation, we kindly requested the supplier to provide us with less graphic alternatives, avoiding excessive violence or gory images.
The Monkey will be released in cinemas on February 21.
