The Missed Opportunity – New State Mobile: A dead game tell no tales
Story Highlights
- After the release, New State Mobile failed to address the bugs and glitches, so the players started rejecting it.
- Device adaptability quickly became another issue as the title requires high-end devices to play.
- Krafton created massive hype before the global launch but failed to provide the in-game experience, causing a major damage to the game.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but express my disappointment with the introduction of New State Mobile into the gaming realm. Initially, it was seen as a potential rival to the beloved PUBG Mobile, sharing the same roots. However, a series of decisions have led us to where we are now – a game that struggles for player acceptance, once thought to shape the future of the mobile gaming industry. This article aims to explore why New State Mobile seems like a missed opportunity in the world of mobile gaming.
Featured Column – The Missed Opportunity
Have you ever played a game and found yourself thinking, “What a shame, I really missed something there!”? GamingonPhone’s column titled “The Missed Opportunity” investigates similar sentiments by examining squandered chances in gameplay, design, or marketing that could have significantly improved these mobile games. Each article delves into the reasons behind the failure and offers suggestions for potential improvements.
New State Mobile failed from the beginning to meet the fan demand
Under the banner of Krafton, PUBG Studios introduced New State Mobile. This game was officially launched on November 11th, 2021, having been announced earlier in February. The anticipation grew rapidly when it surpassed 50 million pre-registrations. Being a fan of battle royale games, I kept a close eye on its development. To be honest, I was hoping for the same exciting experience. I downloaded it immediately after its release, but unfortunately, my expectations were not met following several months of play. The course of events since then has led to where we stand now.
It seems that one of the initial issues might have been the choice of name for New State Mobile, which was titled “PUBG New State“. Since it was marketed as a follow-up to PUBG Mobile, many players perceived it as an update rather than a standalone game. Given the similarities in controls, firing systems, in-game experience, mechanics, and so on, compared to PUBG Mobile, this misconception is understandable. However, the game suffered from technical issues such as lag, bugs, and poor optimization, which ultimately hindered its success.
Consequently, New State Mobile didn’t manage to establish its own unique allure because PUBG Mobile was consistently releasing updates featuring various themes such as ancient and futuristic landscapes. As a result, people perceive New State Mobile as simply another version of PUBG Mobile.
Initially, the programmers understood the issue and rebranded it as New State Mobile. However, the harm had already been inflicted. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to rectify the bugs and malfunctions that players experienced right from the start. This led to performance problems, which gradually influenced players to form a negative opinion of the game.
In the game, we encountered some problems with the gyroscope. As a top-level player in PUBG Mobile’s lobby, I understand the significance of gyro sensitivity for a smooth gaming experience. When you create a game that is comparable to PUBG Mobile and market it under the same label, players anticipate similar in-game mechanisms. However, the settings for sensitivity were distinct between the two games, which made it challenging for players to quickly adapt to New State Mobile, as they had grown accustomed to a specific muscle memory.
In addition, it also suffers from visual problems. The maps and advanced settings often looked similar to player outfits, making it hard to spot adversaries. Consequently, this made it simpler for certain players to hide (camp) while reducing enjoyment for others who found it challenging to locate opponents in the game.
New State Mobile is a futuristic game that missed the current adaptation opportunity
Initially, the release of New State Mobile came with numerous glitches. Since the game was novel and boasted intricate detailing that developers were eager to incorporate, we overlooked the bugs. Despite running on high-end devices, the game frequently crashed or failed to load properly. The issue became prominent when updates failed to provide long-term solutions for these bugs.
Many gamers were eagerly anticipating playing this game in teams. However, since the game demanded a nearly top-tier device for optimal performance, it posed a challenge for most players, including myself who struggled with a satisfactory experience even on high-end equipment. On the contrary, PUBG Mobile and its Indian version BGMI managed to run smoothly across a range of devices, from low-end to high-end.
Due to several problems, the number of players for this game has drastically dropped, leaving many empty slots that are now filled by automated bots. This has given the game a ghost-town feel. By December 2024, the game averages approximately 100,000 players per month, and its revenue is only around $30,000 monthly. Despite the initial optimism, maintaining the community has become quite difficult.
The game experienced its height following its debut, but in the span of four months from December 2021 to April 2021, it nearly halved its monthly earnings. This downward trend persisted, leading to its ultimate failure. Despite falling short of meeting player expectations, there were numerous posts expressing disappointment and frustration across various social media platforms and community groups. The players had high hopes for New State, viewing it as the successor to PUBG Mobile’s stellar performance. Regrettably, the opposite occurred.
The game appears to have developed a strong, supportive community around its engaging content and advantages. I’ve noticed numerous enthusiasts who are dedicated to this particular game, but they too have experienced disappointment. In fact, one player asserted that the game might stay closed for an entire year due to the time it takes to release a new season – over a year has passed since its initial launch!
KRAFTON built too much hype but paid little attention to player experience
The game’s second flaw was that it focused too heavily on promoting itself, at the expense of ensuring a positive user experience. While this marketing strategy led to its success, it seemed as though the developers neglected the quality of the game itself. New State Mobile generated a great deal of hype, but it appeared that they were not dedicated to maintaining the game’s quality. The level of promotion versus the effort put into creating a satisfying gameplay experience were two completely distinct aspects.
Currently, the game seems to be hanging on, more as a vestige of its former self rather than a thriving community. Upon logging in, I was optimistic that it might still have active players, but my hopes were misplaced. It’s no longer the bustling hub it once was, filled with bots instead of real players. However, there are players to be found, though they tend to congregate in high-level lobbies. Surprisingly, some fans have displayed a genuine affection for the game, despite its apparent failure from the developers’ perspective. Remarkably, some even consider it a “superior” title compared to other games within the PUBG Mobile universe.
The social media activity for New State Mobile has significantly decreased, with its last tweet occurring in April 2024. What’s intriguing is that the consistency of posts remains, despite the usual enthusiasm for hyping players and staying trendy being largely absent. However, the game’s official website continues to operate, providing monthly patch updates and maintenance announcements. Frankly, it seems like there aren’t many other options left.
Although there are numerous challenges, there are positives to be found as well. Enthusiastic players remain optimistic that the game still holds promise, but KRAFTON seems to overlook this potential. The interest in the title remains strong. Unfortunately, New State Mobile missed a significant opportunity, despite the buzz and attention it generated. It could have become the next iconic title of the PUBG universe.
